reinstalling XP and want to migrate user accounts.

My XP is sort of messing up, I don't want to totally reinstall, but I don't think I have much of a choice. I don't however want to loose my Users and their settings, files and all that. Is there a program I can download that will archive the "documents and settings" dirs. I know I can zip them, but when I reinstall windows I can't just unzip them back and have the users come back. Any ideas on how to do this? if anyone understands my question 🙂

that's worth trying, but last time I did a repair it got rid of my settings and I had to reinstall a lot of proggies and change settings back. Maybe I did it wrong, I don't know 🙂

Windows XP has a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that basically backs up a user's profile (it's actually pretty customizable in what it willl backup). It's under Accessories somewhere in there. It allows you to specify where you want to save them to (including a local folder that you can later zip and move to another computer or you can save directly to another computer on the network). I've only used it a couple times, but it was pretty nice for what I was doing. Since you don't seem to have many other options, it can't hurt to try.

Log in as user A and export IE cookies and favorites to a folder in user A's "my documents"
If they use a mail program, go to it and export the address book as csv (comma seperated values)
I do not recall how to get the mail messages out, but it is a commonly asked question here. Do a search and you will get that one.

Repeat for each user.
Now:
If you delete a user in accounts (as an admin), it will ask if you want to save that users folder and docs in a file on the desktop.
Gather up all those completed folders, your admin's docs, favorites, cookies, addresses and messages. Put them in a folder and change permissions to "everyone", and burn a CD.

Or use the wizard😀
