reinstalling windows, 7th time tonight

The same system instability that has me reinstalling windows is keeping me from doing just that.

I have separate 98 and se disks and I get anywhere from 17 to 45% of the way through and setup just stalls, the sound of the CD spinning dies off and I end up rebooting. I've shut off all the programs I can in windows, and I can't seem to install from dos. My cd rives (16x dvd and 16x burner) are H and G, but I can't seem to access them.

Can anyone give me some idea about what to do?

Thanks.

Chris
I'm on a college network. might that have anything to do with it? I did shut down all the associated software and even tried pulling out the ethernet.

hmmm...
have you tried formatting your C: before reinstalling the OS?
this of course, will delete all data on that drive... 😉

No, reformatting this drive is not an option. I never had these problems reinstalling windows on other machines.

Have you tried another Windows cd? You can try cleaning the one you already used. Just use any cloth and wipe in a line away from the center, never in a circular motion around the cd.

try copying the cd to your harddrive first and going from there, then when the cd will not work you have it on disk for the installation to refer to.

Then you've only got 40 left to go, 47 is a lucky number when installing windows 😉 Hrm, that happend to me, what does it do if you just turn it on and let it sit there? Without installing anything, i mean could it be a heat problem causing the CPU to hang? Well, gl with figuring that out, i had some problems with this same thing back in october(well, i just had soundcard trouble)

Are you using a win98 bootdisk? If not do so. Sometimes installing over the top just does not work.
