Reinstall Windows XP?

Hi,

I'm upgrading to a new MB from my old one simply to get the AGP lock so I can overclock my FSB without messing up the video card. I was wondering if it's generally possible to just install the new mobo and not have to reinstall windows xp. Is it likely that windows xp would autodetect and function like before? Thanks.

As far as I know,
You shouldn't have to re install unless you are using sata drives, as usually diff motherboard manufactures use different sata controllers, and I don't believe they are compatable with each other
eg/ promise, via, nforce

if you just have an ide I think you'll be fine

I prefer a reinstall to avoid the problems associated with diff chipset drivers. But others try to avoid it. I'll link an article below from Anandtech on how to do it w/o a reformat/reinstall. may wanna back up critical data anyway.

Here's the LINK

Good Luck with it,

Fern

There is a simple way I think:

- Put your original Windows XP CD on CD-ROM and boot from that CD.
- There are three option, (Enter to Install new Windows XP, Repair and Exit). Choose Enter to Install new OS.
- The installation will try to detect the previous OS, just use 'repair' when they found the previous OS
This will delete the old file system and rebuild the new file system including the new hardware (INF)
- Follow the rest instruction given by the installation.

Good Luck!
