Registry - Which Control Set to Modify (Current, 001, or 002)?

Although I have edited the registry without a disaster many times over the years, I never previously thought about which is the proper control set to modify; current, 001, or 002. I assume the current set is the proper one as I think 001 and 002 are backups.

If a disaster does happen, and it is necessary to restore the registry to a previously known good control set (I assume either 001 or 002), how is this done?

AFAIK current is just a link to the current one, either 001 or 002 and if you're at the point where you're trying to figure out which one to restore then you're probably screwed and should just restore the whole thing from backup anyway.
