Registry Editing involved I'm sure: How do I change the default IE search page (i.e. MSN) to something like Google?

does anyone know which registry key this is? I don't want to go hosin' my registry completely...U konw? I just want to know which key it is and fix it. I'm tired of MSN, and I always use google anyway...so I just wanna stick GOOGLE in there instead of MSN U know? 🙂

I think that THIS would rock if someone could tell me how to do it 🙂

TIA and God Bless

so far...from all the searching in the registry that I've done...I've come up w/ this:

Likely candidates from the results achieved by searching for MSN:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer the whole folder may have something

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Backup subkeys
Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
Search Page2 = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
SearchAssistant = http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main subkeys
Default_Search_URL = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch <<<<<<<THIS ONE LOOKS GOOD!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search subkeys
CustomizeSearch = http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchcust.htm
SearchAssistant = http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm
THESE LOOK GOOD TOO

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1229272821-492894223-839522115-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Backup subkeys

Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
Search Page2 = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar=iesearch
SearchAssistant = http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm

LMK whatchu think...

Thanks! and God Bless

Below is a text version of the changes Metacrawler makes to your registry to make it the default search tool. Just replace the metacrawler info with the search engine of your choice and it should work for ya! Be sure to back up your registry prior to starting!!

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Default_Page_URL"="http://www.metacrawler.com/"
"Default_Search_URL"="http://www.metacrawler.com/"
"Search Page"="http://www.metacrawler.com/"
"Start Page"="http://www.metacrawler.com/"
"Search Bar"="http://www.metacrawler.com/tools/ie_default/page.html"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
"SearchAssistant"="http://www.metacrawler.com/tools/ie_default/page.html"
"CustomizeSearch"="http://www.metacrawler.com/customize/"

i think y'all are overcomplicating this...

goto Tools|Internet Options

then under Home Page and set it to what ya want...

it might get changed after you install someting like icq so just change it back afterwards

yeah, only when I ask the search bar to come up do I get the search page that I pasted in there... if I just type stuff into the address bay, well. I STILL GET MSN! DANG IT! 😀

HEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLP! 😀

True, the registry thing is overcomplicating it.

Do this instead:

1) Click on "search" icon on your IE bar
2) Click "Customize"
3) Click "autosearch settings" on the lower left corner on the window that pops up
4) Choose "Google Sites" on the first drop down list
5) Clik "ok" on everything.

Voila! Type in a search phrase on the IE address bar and Google comes up for ya.

🙂

Okay, on my W2K box I got IE5.0 to DEFAULT to google through the address bar using what rootaxs said. THANKS MAN! 😀

now...IE6....we'll see. that's my XPprof box...and so far, I did what he mentioned...and there wasn't an "Advanced Settings" like there was on IE5.0 I think THAT was the key to this...and I'm very surprised it worked, but it ACTUaLLY worked when I typed something in the address bar! WAHOOOOOOOOOO!😀

puck
did you read the first post? I don't want the friggin' search assistant...that thing totally drives me insane...and the registry patches that google provides here, just change the search assistant...🙁 bummer.

anyway, I'm going to try to fix IE6 the way I just did IE5 😀

thanks again rootaxs

You can remedy the search issue in xp by downloading powertoys for xp from http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui and
going to the internet explorer part of it. By typing in for example "goo" for the prefix, and
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&q=%s for the url, all you have to do in ie 6 with xp would be
to type goo whatever in the address bar and it will bring up google with your search results. Don't use go as your prefix, because go
whatever will still bring up msn search results for whatever. Works like a charm.
