I keep having problems where chkdisk has to run before loading windows, then windows won't load at all and I have to use the hard disk repair tools to fix it. I reformatted and reinstalled windows but a couple weeks later chkdisk is running again. Considering that its a new hard drive the problem is pretty likely a faulty unit right? I haven't done anything I can think of that would introduce malware. Thanks.

What is probably happening is an automatic boot time CHKDSK that somehow has gotten set up in your system.

Do a Google for Automatic CHKDSK and you should see several solutions, mainly involving Registry entries.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see how that would account for it being so screwed I had to reformat and reinstall windows. I could not boot, could not access the disk after booting from cd, and the windows install cd could not install to it until I reformated. Plus there are 2 partitions on it, sometimes its one or the other, both, or neither that chkdsk runs for.

Bad memory will case data corruption as well as a flaky HDD. Download Memtest86+ and run it on your system to see if it finds anything amiss.

You might also download your hard drive makers diagnostics to check the drive as well.
