Registry cleaners (free or shareware)

I remember seeing things mentioned in other threads, but I can't remember what they were. I'm looking for a freeware program that will clean up the old junk off my system, especially the registry. Back when I first got this computer, I wasn't too careful about how I removed programs I was finished with, and now I have a lot of junk cluttering up my add/remove programs box, start menu, registry, and so on. Does anybody know of a good, reliable, and free utility that can do the cleanup?
