Registering my first domain name

Hey guys, I want to register my first domain and have someone host it for me. I think I am going to register it at namecheap.com as that seems to be the cheapest place. But what do I need to do after that? What webhosting companies are the best for the buck? I dont need anything great, jsut cheap. Any suggestions?

Update: I registered my domain at namecheap.com and signed up for hosting at MelitaWeb. Had some trouble with them. Requested to cancell and get my money back this morning and they pretty much blamed it on my ISP. Still cancelled service with them and they gladly did what i requested, but without a sorry. Signed up with dathorn right after that and already got my account info and able to log in. Very quick. Wish I had taken heed at RossMan advice and gone with a more reputable host.

The best plan in the $10 range is a resellers account with http://melitaweb.net/reseller.php

However since you want something really cheap I would go with HostPC.com for $25/yr which is currently ON SALE offering:

250MB Disk Space
8GB Bandwidth
25 POP3 E-mail accounts
*SPAM FILTERING*
Unlimited E-mail forwards
5 MySQL Databases
Unlimited subdomains (within account limits)
Free Awstats
Free Daily, user accessible backups
24x7 FTP access
Web Based File Manager
Squirrelmail (v 1.4.0) web based mail service (for checking mail from school)
Front Page Extensions (if requested)

You get so much more with a resellers account so I would go with that.

Registration: I always use Godaddy. Cheap and Reliable.

For Hosting just go to www.webhostingtalk.com and ask on there. Put a request in the request forum and you'll get offers of really cheap and/or expensive or whatever you're looking for.

I'm glad that you finally decided on getting a resellers account, you can provide hosting to anyone and charge them whatever you want.

Just had an online flower shop from Aliso Viejo, CA who is willing to pay $30/mo for 100MB webspace and 500MB bandwidth. I would have signed them up if I had enough resources but I don't

Here are my top picks for a resellers account from the best listed first:

1) dathorn.com $13.50 for 2GB/30GB --- the best

2) CredibleHost.com $12.95 for 2GB/30GB ON SALE --- also great, reliable and good support

3) REMOVED - NOT RECOMMENDED

After you register your domain with NameCheap.com I can help you setup your FREE personalized name servers and get you started with WHM/cPanel.

Dont want to hijack the thread but Im looking to register a domain name too and I was wondering why you recommend namecheap.com over godaddy Rossman, it looks like if you get an account for multiple years godaddy is cheaper.

Yea, I think I made a good choice with that. If only I would get that e-mail.

Just personal preference.

GoDaddy is ICANN accreditted which NameCheap.com is not.

Just don't use Joker or RegisterFly, definitely go for GoDaddy.com

What's the deal on registerfly? I looked at their page the other day and it looked good. Didn't use them, but figured I might in the future. Have people had problems with them?

That HostPC deal looks pretty good. I was signed up with e-rice, but I'm still in my trial, so I think I might just switch to them.

Can I consider HostPC RossMAN certified? ;)

Edit: might check WHT about registerfly, if Rossman says to avoid them, that's good enough for me. He's pretty knowledgable about these sorts of things :)

royaldank - I also thought RegisterFly.com was great because of all the freebies you get but it just isn't worth it. Trust me.

MrBond - HostPC.com has received several positive reviews from WHT, you receive quite a few resources for only $25/yr not a bad deal. Better than RippleHost but not as costly as AddAction.net

Well I just got my activation e-mail from melitaweb and they signed me up for the 2-star plan for $22.95/month! I only wanted the starter plan for $9.99/month or whatever.:| I really hope they can fix their error. Update will follow as soon as I hear something from them.

Update: I ended up IMing the people because I have to go to work soon and I was running out of time. But basically the text of the e-mail is derived from a form that a person fills out or maybe it's automated, that part wasnt too clear. But they said that the part of the e-mail that has my plan information was not updated to reflect what I was getting. It still showed plan information from the last sale. I was never going to be charged or anything for the 2-star plan. I can post the AIM conversation if anyone really cares.

WRONG!

I used to tout RippleHost as the cheapest when they were $4.99/yr but they recently bumped it back up to $9.99/yr.

Currently the best value is HostPC.com for $25/yr which is ON SALE and offers:

Hmm. Great information there Rossman! What's your take on godaddy.com's private (unlisted) registration? Do you think it's worth the extra money?
