here is a snip from the specs on a motherboard
#########--------------------starts_here-------------------------##############
It is one of the few boards that features 4 DIMMs (Supports 6 banks up to 3 GB DRAMs (512Mb x8/x16 DRAM technology)
for un-buffered DDR SDRAM module Supports 8 banks up to 4 GB DRAMs (512Mb x8/x16 DRAM technology) for register
DDR SDRAM module No ECC function support),
########------------------------ends_here-------------------------#############
i have noticed that quite a few of the motherboards with 4 memory slots seem to support more memory if it is buffered than if it is not
1)My main question is why is this the case ???
Other questions include:
2)And what exactely is the diff between registered and un-buffered (unregistered? non-ecc?) ????
3)Does all registered memory support ECC ???
Note: I do however understand what ECC is and have a basic understanding of how it works
4)Why would a board support registered memory but not ECC ??
5)Why do they call it registered memory anyways ??

ps thanks for putting up with my badgering
