I know some of you guys are fans of other registrars, but here's an email I got from Register.com today. I've used Register.com since I ditched Network Solutions a few years back (their service was terrible and at Register.com I could do everything I needed myself). This is 43% off their normal pricing of $35/year.

I use Registerfly because they are $8/year and include email redirection (can be customized for each id in the domain!) and web redirection as well as a tiny email account if you don't have one elsewhere.

If you set up an account, they will eventually email you with a dollar off per domain deal.

Do these other registrars like Go Daddy provide DNS hosting for your domains (other than for ones that are parked there)? The reason I ask if because Register.com does at no extra charge and I wonder if these other companies try to nickel and dime you for that ???

Yeah, quality in this case may be a moot point. My vote is with godaddy. $8, $19, $35..... either way your domain name gets registered, you mine as well pay for the least expensive.

You get what you pay for. it is a hot deal considering they are one of the few companies on the web making $$. Where will your cheap fly by night registrars be in 10 years?? if they aren't around, where will your domains be? How much domain configuration capabilities do they offer?
Let me remind everyone about Cyberwings hosting...... That's an extreme example, but it can, and will happen.

Piece of mind = priceless

350 posts in 2 years and you fell for the register.com scam? And thought it was hot?

Anyway, the 20 posts above mine all praise the stiripped-down no-frills godaddy for some reason. Namecheap offers all the features you coulld ever want -- far more than Godaddy, register, or Network Solutions. Oh, and they're less expensive.

19.95 is an excellent deal for register.com. Register.com has the best customer service that I have ever dealt with in name hosting. They offer a nice control panel and dns hosting.

I can recommend register.com to my clients with no hessitation.

I know register.com should be around in the next 10 years. I have had problems with cheap name providers in the past.

Uh.. I hate to break this to you, but even if GoDaddy goes under tomorrow (I doubt it they have been arround for several years now) your domain name is still registered under your name. The actual sale of the registration is GoDaddy propriatary, but the actuall Domain assignment and registration is still government regulated (kind of makes sense that this information is centralized). Domain registering is kind of like buying a house through a realtor. If your realtor goes belly up after you have bought your house, the house is still yours. Cyberwings is hosting related so if you go through GoDaddy to get your hosting done, that is a different story.

So no, you are not getting what you pay for, you are over paying for something you can get cheaper.

Register.com is a ripoff !! I still have one of my domains registered trhough them because they automatically charged my credit card I had used the previous year, since I was nearing the end of my first year lease.
I would have fought with them over it but really do not have the time.
Oh and they sent me an email saying it was time for a renewal (due in feb) and offered me the great price of $29.95yr for a two year minimum....Idiots, they will not get another penny of my money.
I have another domain at dixiesys and they registered me with enom.com for $15.00 yr which is where I will transfer my other domain to or try godaddy since it seems highly recommended.

Personally I use GoDaddy and have been very happy. But if you are tempted by Register you might also consider DotEasy.com. For $25 you get a domain, and e-mail, and web hosting, etc. Here is everything you get from DotEasy for $25:

www.yourdomain.com Web Hosting
20MB Web Storage
Unlimited FTP Access
10 Email Accounts
Domain Forwarding
POP & Web-based Email Access
Email Forwarding
Email Autoresponder
1GB Monthly Traffic Allowance

when these cheap registrars go belly up, your domain name will be unavailable until you transfer to another registrar and you will have to worry about transfer fees, and time in making the transfer go through. (and hopefully your site will be available for that period of time, but it might not be)
I will never register with any of the cheapest registrars
#1 because i can manage all my domains from one central admin panel
#2 because i need peace of mind that i won't have to deal with where my domain name is and if the company is solid
#3 because 10 bucks a year extra really is worth it to me

Incidently, if you call them when reserving/renewing a domain name and mention the cheap guys, they will register you for $19.99 for one year as well.

Scoreadeal and chuck2002: What you do not seem to understand is that domain registration is NOT webhosting. Once your domain is registered and the IP propogates through the DNS, it is impossible to kill your domain by the registrar going bankrupt. In addition, registrars that don't advertise have next to no auxillery expenses, so concerns about bankruptsy are kind of stupid. They are a middleman that offers access to government regulated DNS servers. Once they have sold you access to it, and you have entered in the IP you want it to point to, you never need to use it again, and it resides on the DNS servers. Register.com is vastly overpriced, and preys on the fact that many newbies to webhosting will at some point go to register.com and think that it is the "standard internet registration site." Any competitive registration solution is either <$10 or is packaged with hosting, for conveniance.

Yes, all you "the sky is falling!" people don't understand how domain-name registration works.

Even if they did go belly up, your domain name would continue to resolve just as it does now. You could easily transfer it to a different registrar.

If they go belly up, then many of the dns features that you want will start failing.
everything will go to the dns server assigned.

say I want xxx.riznick.com to go to 1.1.1.1
and I want www.riznick.com to go to 1.1.1.2
and I want ftp.riznick.com to go to 1.1.1.3

If the registrar goes belly up, the forwarding will fail. all requests will go to the dns server assigned, which the belly up company doesnt operate anymore. Sure I will still have the domain, but many of the functions will fail. Mail forwarding for example, may fail after a few days.

Ok, since u guys are on the subject I've got a question for you. My domain has come up for renewal and I have not chosen who to move it to (I currently use namezero but at $34.95 a year u've got to be crazy). I need a place that supports multiple xxxxx.yourdomain.com forwards and also has mail service (preferably 10megs or more). Who can offer this at the best price and service? I know I can go look this up online but here there are people who have had experience with the companies.

This is true, the DNS server is operated by the company you registered but you CAN change that very easily...
