Shame I'll be spending the day in hospital on the 1st of Feb UK time.

Cannot wait for the RTS of the year 2011, after RTS of the year 2009 and 2010 :)

Don't be silly :p

This will probably be an early player vs. player multiplayer test for bug finding purposes, maybe even a bit of balance. I foresee no SP or TLS (which are the only two reasons I'm buying it)

Pre-ordered Retribution with the Imperial Guard package off Steam!

I finally finished DoW2 and Chaos Rising yesterday, took me a week to finish both hahah! I completely devoured those games, awesome RTS/Action/RPG blend!

Warhammer and Warhammer 40k have one of the deepest and most awesome lore in the genre out there, damn good job I love it!

Read some of the books, there are lots of good ones, one that everyone seems to love and even people that don't know of WH40k is the Eisenhorn trilogy, it is quite amazing.

Thanks KaOTiK, I just ordered the Eisenhorn trilogy...was cheap!

NP, I hope you enjoy it, I've read it three times and simply love it. I read quite a bit of WH40k, so if you want any more suggestions on stuff I'll be happy to give you a good idea at what you should also check out.

If you dig Eisenhorn though you'll like Ravenor as well, while not quite as good as Eisenhorn it also is great, same type of book by the same author and Ravenor is actually one of Eisenhorns pupils.

If someone is new to the WH40K series, is the Eisenhorn trilogy still recommended?

Yeah, there are somethings that might make you scratch your head but they usually get explained in some manner still. It really is a good spot to jump in cause it is an excellent story.

The biggest things I can think of that someone new to 40k might wonder what they are is:

Servitors- they are usually prisoners or other such people that instead of the Imperium killing them they wipe their mind clean and put in some basic commands to do a task, they are highly modified with body parts being replaced for other parts depending on their task and such. They are totally mindless and can only do their task programmed into them.

Reason for that is AI is banned cause it nearly destroyed humanity thousand of years ago.

Warp- is basically like another dimension that the Imperium uses to travel far distances in space or the void as it is called. The warp is the home of deamons the chaos gods as well. That is a simple explanation since the warp is a lot of stuff and none of it is really clear or concrete.

Adeptus Machanicum - handle and are responsible for technology for the Imperium.

Ordo Mallus - is divison of the Inqusitors that deal with deamons specifically, Ordo Xenos deals with aliens and Ordo Hereticus deals with heretics in the imperium.

The only other thing is that they might replace words with their own, like a pict is a camera/video and medica is a hospital or such for example.

I believe the book does a good job explaining most things it encounters for the relevance of it for the story.

For those having trouble registering their beta on the site because it is still getting hammered:

Try an international site like THQ.fr or THQ.de. They seem to be working better and you can still get your key that way.

Now that we've had some time on Retribution beta, I'd like to hear what people think of the MP side of things.

I've updated my website with a short impression of the Retribution beta, available here.

Overall it feels pretty good. It's not perfect, but it's definitely way better balanced than normal Relic expansions and is even pretty good compared to their "perfect patches."

The only real complaints seem to be buff Great Unclean One and nerf Autarch, although there are still plenty of other minor details that need attending to.

lol I somehow managed to put 25 hours into the game so far.

I have been playing the guard, and my complaint is that, in order to win, the guard don't play like the guard. I want lots of guardsmen. But once I get 2 fully upgraded guardsmen squads it seems I am stuck in tier 2 and never have enough resources. Either because the constant reinforcing I need to do or some upkeep cost. And I always have to keep a Chimera nearby to auto-reinforce because the guardsmen drop like flies. All it takes is some hero ability (damn you librarian) or grenade (damn you plague champion) or something and half of them instantly die. So 2 fully upgraded guardsmen squads don't really work. Have to cut down on the guardsmen and their upgrades and get other stuff instead. But I don't want to. I want tons of guardsmen to hold the line, not get insta-raped.

And catachan devils mellee-ing to death banshees and assault marines is silly.
Stormtroopers are too squishy.
Leman Russ is too expensive.
Manticore is of questionable usefullness. It denies ground to the enemy, but only noobs get killed by it and a competent player will send something to kill it quickly. It should be moved to tier 3 and made more powerful and expensive. The Leman Russ should be moved to tier 2 and made cheaper. If anyone gets a tier 2 tank, it should be the guard.
