Region 2 DVD question...

I was about to purchase a DVD what is encoded for playing in Region 2. Since I'm in the US, will I be able to play this DVD? If not, can I use something like DVDShrink to strip the region specific encoding, and burn the movie on a new disc so I can play it?

I think you can change the region on your DVD player something like 5 times... so unless you've done it 5 times already, yes.

Unless the firmware on your PC dvd drive is region free (very few are now, but there are firmware workarounds), you will not be able to even read the DVD to rip it. As mentioned above you can usually change it 5 times, but I'm not sure if you can strip region encoding.

DVD Shrink CAN remove region information.

Your drive needs to be set to Region 2 to read it in the first place though, as others have said, you cant change, or have a limited number of times to change it.

So, just buy a cheep DVD-ROM drive and set to that region, and you are all set

VLC player will ignore region settings. The downside is that since it is all software decoding, it tends to run a bit heavy.

There's a program out there called DVD Region Free which bypasses the Region check on pretty much any computer. It's not free, but it's cheap.

You can also rip the DVD to your hard drive using DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter, any of which have the option to remove the region encoding. You can then re-burn it or view it on your hard drive.

Finally, there are a number of DVD players that can be made region free easily. Check Videohelp.com's DVD hacks section.

Well there are 2 issues here really:

1- The region code

2- Resolution

Region 2 can either be PAL or NTSC if it is PAL then you will either need to convert it to NTSC to watch on your TV OR if you have a DVD player that plays PAL AND region 2 and it will automatically format it correctly to be viewable on your tv.

Most DVD players can be reset to "Region 0" which will allow them to play any DVD regardless of region code.
