I'm a MS Action Pack subscriber. I had Win XP and Office XP installed on a laptop. unfortunately someone stole the laptop. :( major boos. fortunately it wasn't my TabletPC i recently purchased or i'd be really bummed.

anyway, so i called up Microsoft to see if they could deactivate that copy of WinXP as the laptop was stolen.

they told me No, they cannot do that.

i found it interesting that they weren't able to deactivate that copy of Win XP. it's a good thing i guess.

actually, in a round about way there is, if they deactivated every copy of win xp where the hardware had been stolen, those people would be forced to either buy the OS or steal it.

so there is potential for money if they could deactivate remotely :)

Deactivating the OS would mean that computers without internet access won't be able to work. If deactivation was possible, it would work something like Counter Strike does, random checks of the CD-key via the internet.

well, in this case i KNOW what the product Key is. i installed if off my Microsoft Action pack, so no need to look for a random one.

how do you expect them to deactivate it? the activation only happens once, once its done its done.

What you can do is post your key to the public, so that MS will be forced to kill that key. Like they did to that famous FCK GWB key.
