Refusing a fedex package

I've never done this before. I bought two baby gates from amazon yesterday then tried to cancel them a couple hours later because I realized they wouldn't fit in all areas in the house. Surprisingly amazon sent me an email saying they couldn't cancel them because it was to late but that I could refuse the package.

The fedex dude usually puts on a pair of moccasins and hides the package in a rarely traveled but random location around the outside of my house. I'm not even sure he knocks. The chances of some one catching him during the delivery are about zero. I've heard you can put signs up but assuming that doesn't work what are my options? Can I bring the packages to a fedex store after they are delivered?

This may or may not help:

http://www.ehow.com/how_8457070_refuse-fedex.html

"1

Leave a note on your door if you know the expected arrival date of your FedEx package. State that you wish to refuse the package. Write your name and date on the note for clarity. The FedEx person will see the note and refrain from delivery.

2

Inform the FedEx delivery person that you are refusing the shipment, if you are home at the time of delivery. Depending on the package type, you may have to sign a statement declaring your refusal.

3

Bring a FedEx package to the local office, if you come home to find an unwanted package. Speak to a customer service representative and inform him that you wish to refuse the package and FedEx will return it to the sender."

My UPS guy is the same way. Never hear or see the guy even when I'm home all day.
Last time I had to refuse a package because of a return I had to go to the nearest UPS facility and tell them I didn't see the driver but needed to refuse the delivery. They took it back no problem and returned it tot Newegg for me.

Hopefully fedex will be the same way. The fedex drop location is kind of out of my way but not to big of a deal. The packages weigh a lot so if I have to pay return shipping it really changes how I'm going to deal with it.

I guess I should just use a multifaceted approach. I'll call fedex, and put up notes with the tracking numbers and if that doesn't work I'll try to bring it back. I suppose the worst that could happen is it won't work.

Call FedEx itself and explain the situation.

They should be able to flag the package and get it returned.

For ups, that requires a certain level of service which most 'cheapest' shipments don't include.

If your fedex is anything like ups, they will ignore notes but you can take it to a fedex location afterwards and tell them you're rejecting delivery.

If you don't catch the guy dropping it off, you can just drop it off unopened at a FedEx Office / Kinko's or whatever they're called now.

I wanted to refuse a package delivery and took the package to a FED EX Office. The workers flatly refused to accept it claiming they "couldn't make a label for it" and that I would have to call the 1-800 number to arrange a pickup.

I called the 1-800 number and was told that FED EX Offices are supposed to accept refused delivery packages, as long as they have not been signed for (as mine hadn't been.)

I called back the FED EX Office and told the manager this and he argued with me, still insisting everyone has it wrong, including the rep from FED EX and they "have no way to send a package someone hasn't paid for."

Just warning you before you waste your time dragging a package to a FED EX Office. They don't know what they're doing.

Thanks for the help Tawn. I put your advice in an envelop addressed to myself one year into the past so hopefully I get the message.

I don't even remember how I solved this. I think I just left a note.

Let me know if your past self gets it. I'd like to use that service to prevent a few screw-ups here and there. :whiste:

I've been through this too many times.

Refusing the package will take longer than accepting it and then requesting a refund. If it gets refused, it gets sorted much much much much slower than an RMA.

Accept the package, initiate a refund/return. Its much quicker and easier.

I wish people shopped first then ordered rather than just ordering something and figuring it out when they get it.
