Hello ALL!
I am a newbie. I have a question, please don't just laugh. I built a computer that was to be a Music Workstation well before I understood much about how to build a computer for a specific purpose and why which CPU's work for what tasks etc. Here is what I built first. AMD had just released there 12 core Opteron's I got 2 x 6100 series 12 cores at 2.2Ghz and mounted them on an ASUS KGPE-AD16 with 4 sticks of RAM and 2 x 1 TB drives in RAID 0 I quickly found that no matter how many cores I had to run plugins that I had to have faster cores for my main program which was SONAR 7. So I saved some cash for a rebuild and got 2 x 6282SE AMD Opteron's, kept the 1 TB drives as Storage, got 4 x 2 TB Western Black Enterprise SATA 2 drives and put them on a 6 GB/s RAID 1 for speed with a 750 MB SSD on the 6Gb/s bus for the OS which was Windows 7 Ultimate. This was a long time ago and when I got the new CPU's they sere the fastest ones they made for my Board, I knew nothing about floating point processing etc., ASUS had given me an ASMB4 chip because they sent me a bad MOBO first and took months to get me a new one and now that I want it I am having trouble finding it and the TPM Module I got for cheap. Got a 1600 Watt LEPA PSU and a new GPU, an XFX with a RADEON 7850 Black Edition that was mildly factory overclocked. I don't play games, just wanted to have multiple screens and couldn't afford a commercial GPU. I got Noctua's Best coolers for my processors and new fans for my Thermaltake Xaser IV Case. Well things were definitely better. Intel had yet to come out with anything like a 16 core CPU and mine would run all cores at3 GHZ and 1/2 at 3.3GHZ and the coolers never let them get warmer than about 50 deg.c or so. Well fast forward years later and a new motherboard as I had a Power Spike the blew my cheap Powerstrip as well as the MOBO, Insurance came through so I had a new one installed. Now All of my fans except my CPU fans decided to die pretty much all at once, so for now I have a 12 " fan blowing n my open case to keep things from shutting down due to heat. Something has happened to my OS or another system and my computer keeps restarting when pushing the drives hard, I can't see any of the smart info on the RAID because that only works on a RAID with SAS disks, the SSD is fine as are the 2 1TB drives. I have replaced as many driver as I could that needed it which helped, but it still locks or sometime just restarts for no reason. I got a 5.25" Temp probe monitor thing that has something like 6 thermocouples and nothing it running way hot. I had an issue where a power supply plug came off of my SSD and the system went dead, but I finally figured it out. I do have a fair amount of cracked Torrent music software, but nothing new and all were installed before this started happening. I bought a year of unlimited cloud storage to load as much as I could up on Amazon's cloud for $59.95/year in order to reinstall the OS. Then they pulled a bate and switch and changed the deal from unlimited for $59.95 to $59.95/TB. I have until April 2008. Unfortunately it took me forever (weeks going on two months of 24/7 uploading) and is still uploading things due to Time Warners/Spectrum fastest upload speed of 5-6 Mb/s and down is a bit better at 60Mb/s. SO, DO I fix what I have, get some SAS disks for the 8 slot back 6GB/s bus and put 3 or 4 huge SATA Drives on the front 3 GB/s bus for back up, the RAID wont do RAID 5, just 0,1,10, or get new fans so the case is cooled properly, put all of my Files ON several large SATA disks over USB 3 or e-sata and put them on the shelf and try to sell the thing and build a new one. or do I fix what I have and finish with the build I never finished and use it as a hoe cloud/media server and get a laptop and give up on making music or what. I am at a place where I do not even know If I decided to sell my computer if it were fixed and running right , what I could get so I could build a new one or just throw in the towel. What is what I have worth? Anybody know? Rochester, NY won't get Fiber for a while and I can't afford an NAS. If I look a computers that have similar parts to mine they are $3,500-$7,000. But something tell me I couldn't get much more than $100 if I could get that. Any one have any ideas about what I should do. Thanks for any real suggestions that don't just put down the whole AMD thing and how I went about wasting thousands of dollars. Thanks, Brian
