Refurbished mobo and processor

First time poster, long time reader, and all around newb



I was on newegg looking for a processor and mobo for my sisters computer. I was thinking about buying them refurbished. Do any of you guys use refurbished components? She could save around $75, but is it worth the risk of buying refurbed goods.

 
I really would like to stick with intel. The price is fine and I would be willing to pay more for it, but if refurbished is just as good then I would go with that.
 
Cheap/inexspensive and Intel don;t go together. Get a new nforce2 mobo and Athlon XP CPU.
 
Semprons are EXTREMELY cheap as well. Better performers, less money. Check the "HOT DEALS" Forum

Its all I have ever had except my work computer which is an athlon XP 2600 and I dont like it, but I guess that is just preference.

So have any of you guys used refurbished before, or are you guys just amd fans?

its all you ever had, so why break out of the box now right? :roll: intel is NOT the way to go in your situation. but if you insist on getting an inferior product for the same price, then go for it.

intel is way overpriced at the low end, but if you insist:
* the main problem with a refurb board is it may not include the driver CD, cables, and most important the metal plate for the ports that you need for the back of the case ("i/o shield")

* the secondary problem with refurb mobo is that someone may have damaged and returned the board -- these returns are not tested the way a manufacturer refurbished stereo or toaster is.

* the problem with a refurb CPU is again the previous owner may have damged it, for example with a heavy overclock and raised voltage.

Yes you can return the board or CPU (at your own expense) if you catch a problem in time, but it is still a risk.
