I've just been browsing newegg's site and they got all sorts of cool stuff like refurbed Pentium 4's, motherboards, video cards, and other stuff.

Would it be smart to buy a 2.0GHz pentium 4 refurbed? or mobo? What could possibly be wrong with a refurbed processor or mobo?

Well, first of all, a refurbished product means that something was probably wrong with it and then it was returned and has been "fixed".
I might buy a mobo that is a refurb, but not if I really needed something to work perfectly, I might buy it if I was making another computer but not for my main machine.
I would definitely never buy a refurb cpu. How can you "fix" a cpu unless there wasn't anything wrong with it in the first start, or maybe the company didn't find the problem that the customer had.

Afterall, if the deal is too good to be true, chances are that it's not good.

I purchased two refurb IWill KK266R boards from Newegg. They came with all the usual retail packaging and looked brand new, although the IDE cables were obviously refolded, like someone had returned it. When I built the two machines, they had a constant reboot problem which turned out to be a problem with USB devices. I flashed both boards with the latest BIOS and the problem was cured, and I'm still using both of them one year later with absolutely no problems what so ever.

I really think their refurbs are customer returns from people who simply couldn't get the hardware to work in their system. Maybe they didn't know quite what to do or how to do it, I don't really know. Once a processor is smeared with ASIII, they can't sell it as new, so they unload it. If you buy it, and it doesn't work, quickly return it.

Just remember, if you buy a refurb you better build the system quick and test it out throughly, because the warranty is only good until 30 days after invoice date. They must receive the board by that date, so you really only get about two weeks to check it out and send it back, if you have problems.

Actually, I was just considering the refurb Epox boards they currently have...

Funny thing you mention this topic, I've never once got a dead or flaky Refurb. I've gotten my fair share of retail parts that were DOA or crapped out on me within the first few hours of use and I have to say that I have had better success with refurbs than retail parts!

Bought refurbs from Newegg and everything works just like new. Most of them have free Fedex shipping too. Got all the cables and manuals. Also ordered a refurb Antec SX1030B (w/ 300 Watt PS) for $79, but was given a SX1040B (w/ 400W PS) instead. Saved about $40 from the new price. I was able to make another system w/ mostly refurb parts, expect for the CPU, HDD, and DDR memory.

I bought a refurb Tyan Tiger MP from NewEgg and its working great. The eccp options in the BIOS arent working, but thats not a huge drawback and I havent bothered messing with it much to fix it. I probably just need to update the BIOS or something.

There was a deal on them a while back mentioned in the DC forum. A bunch of people bought them and I dont remember seeing anyone having problems with them.

sweet.
I guess the general concensus is that newegg refurbs rule. I noticed that the refurb procs are all 423 pin except for a 1.9 that's 478 but OOS.
What's the difference between 423 pin and 478?

Most of the stuff in the Refurb section is pretty good. The only thing your taking a chance with is the DVD-ROM drives. Most of the time they list these thing really low..like $24 bucks shipped. I used to buy them whenever they had them in stock to resell on ebay for about double. The thing was about 50% of them were bad. It got to be just a waste of time.

I've had 2 or 3 refurbs from newegg...alll motherboards actually, and they all worked great, I've had more issues with new items from newegg than refurbed ones.

I've been keeping an eye on their refurb video cards (which I believe are simply customer returns) but the problem is they always say "BAREBONE, OEM CARD" -- what good is a VIVO card without all the add-on goodies?

Newegg has a 30-day return of refurbs- but what about the manufactuor's warranty? Is that still valid? If so, that gives an extra cushion should something go wrong down the road.

I was wondering the same thing. I think the 30 day is simply the only warranty. Kinda scary but if it works when you get it, who knows.

I bought a refurb Asus P4B266-C mobo from newegg for 70 bucks and it works perfectly. Refurb doesn't always mean that something was wrong with it and it was fixed. If you send your product back within the return period and pay a restocking fee, it is sold again as refurbished and not new.

Somebody mentioned that a lot of refurb DVD drives from newegg were bad, what about other drives like CD-RWs or HDs? Also, when it says "OEM, BAREBONE" are they really barebone, or do they usually have all the usual stuff you get when you buy a new item (only without a warranty, obviously)? Another thing, I was just looking through the newegg refurbs, and a lot of the items are listed as not being in stock. What's the point of listing an item if its not in stock? I can understand why they do it on new items, but refurbs?

I have bought plenty of items from newegg refurb (over 20 items). Out of those items, only 1 was bad (video card). About manufacture warrantee, some manufactures will not provide warrantee for a refurb and some manufacturers will. For example, refurbished harddrives from maxtor and seagate are easily RMAed.

And although it says oem and barebones, it doesnt necessarily mean its barebones. Many of the video cards and mbs I bought came in the retail box, manual, cables, and software. Some came with nothing except for the item itself. So I guess, its all luck.

I hope this was useful to anyone thinking about buying refurb stuff from newegg.

Save yourself some money, get the 4200...the extra $$$ isn't worth the extra 5 fps...

Me and Gotey have bought a couple of boards from Neweggs refurb batches. Both of us have had awesome boards. I have never had a problem so far. I would definitely do it again. My board and goteys boards seem to have never been mounted at all. Sometimes i guess you get lucky and sometimes you dont. I hope I helped.

I've bought two refurbs from newegg. Both work great. An Aopen 56x Cd-rom and a Pioneer 106S Dvd-rom. I payed about 19 shipped for the cd-rom and 36 for the dvd drive.

VIDEO CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try to avoid those.

I bought a refurbish CL Geforce DDR, it give me bunch of line and distorted image, so I RMA it right away. (thinking that must be my luck)
Right after I RMA the CL Geforce DDR, I buy the Gainward Ti450. SAME THING HAPPEN!!!!
NOT only the Ti450 start having "ghost residue" after 10 min of WEB Browsing, I also found it has been flash to Leadtek's Ti BIOS.

I learn my lesson, I got what I pay for. :(
