My data is worth more than $50, I seen the newer crucials for $200. Refurbisdhed other computer parts I am okay but storage you do not mess with that.

Seems like a great deal for a Steam drive...

Nice find, OP.

Good point. I have separate SSDs for OS and Steam, and a platter drive for backing up game saves that aren't steam cloud. If the Steam drive dies, I just need to re-download whatever game I'm playing now first then get the others over time.

I'm inclined to agree. I've seen brand new Crucial MX100 512GB for around $200, just waiting for BF/CM for some crazy $150-ish sale.

If you need an SSD now and are OK with the risks, then this is definitely worth considering.

That is the only way I would consider it, a pure game drive which you can redownload. This type of data can be recovered by re downloading it (you may lose your saves but often your saves are on the cloud or in your my documents folder). That and the steam folder needs it a lot, for there are so many little files that can be in that folder and those types of things drive platter drives crazy.

Good Logic Jackstar :)

That said my tingling sense sees ssd and refurb in the same sentence and it says run away and do not want :p . Even though crucial is usually good with ssds, I would argue tier 1 or close to it in reliability with ssds.

The first mistake is having irreplaceable data on solid state in general. Any kind of failure means a trip to the lab. Too many times I have seen systems crash on an oyherwise fine system and cannot boot or the SSD is no longer detected. Other means of storage are better for longevity, SSD is for the OS and programs because of the speed but spinners, optical discs or even tapes should compliment it. Also I have had good luck with refurb spinners but I have been buying exclusively RE3 and RE4 drives that are dependable as all get out.

Always do backups?

Backups very important. That said the two problems with that.

1) Sometimes you forget to do them or they are not up to date enough.

2) They take time and headache fixing something that should not have died.

Backups are very important, they are not a solution to the problem, they are the insurance check that occurs after the hurricane blowed down your house. If you are afraid of hurricane damage do not buy beachfront property.
