I bought a refurb MB from Newegg, it is goofy as hell! Starts to boot as soon as I turn on my UPS and the reset button doesn't reset. Other than that, it works fine. Didn't manage to test this MB until well after the return period has passed (my bad).

So buyer beware! I wouldn't purchase another refurb from Newegg.

Many motherboards will do this starting up as soon as power is applied, my soyo dragon does it. It is a setting in the bios that lets it boot upon power being restored like you lost power when it was running and boots as soon as power is restored. Have you tried just trying to reset it using a screwdriver on the pins, could be a switch problem.

Some of you are bashing newegg too much. If you want a perfect item, fork over the cash and get new. As for me, I'll continue buying "refurbs". At lease newegg labels such items as these as refurbs. They could be dishonest like many vendors and just sell returns as new.

There's always higher risk when you buy refurbished; that's why it's cheaper. [/obvious]
Given how little testing the average user will do on a PSU vs., say, a graphics card, it's no wonder the PSU problem will be missed in the shortened return window for refurb'd products. Then you're screwed. PSU problems tend to be very nonspecific anyway, so it takes a while to isolate the source.

Get new Antec PSUs here (or any Antec hardware for that matter) for half of what it costs on Antec's site 🙂

Costs me 70 for a True550 unit. If you're in the CA Bay Area, PM me and I'll hook you up with the info.

got my 430 trupower refurb Friday from Newegg -- you guessed it --- DOA . just sent in the RMA request- we'll see what happens

I purchased a reburb HEC 350W from newegg a few months back. It runs my XP 1700 fine. But, well after the return period, I found out why it was a refurb. It does the strangest thing that maybe some of you EEs can help me with. I typically leave my PC on. However, when I shut it down to go out of town then returned a few days later, I could not get my PC to come on. I made sure the UPS had power, etc., but it would not come on. In despiration, I tried a different power cord, viola, it started. Though I had a bad power cord, but it worked fine on my scanner. This happed again when I turned it off for a few days. Now, when I turn it off, I unplug the power cord, then when returning, I plug it back in and no problem.

The only weird thing is, it will only happen when it has been off for a while. What is up with this? - ITS A REFURB!!

Hmm, well fact is most power supplies are never completely "off" when the system is powered down. They're online to a degree and waiting for you to push the power button or some other powerup event to occur. Theres even usually some amount of power applied to the motherboard even when the system is "off". Given that the machine works fine with all the same parts, and this problem only occurs with that power supply, then you've got some problem in the standby section of the power supply.

Unless you're quite the whiz with power supply repair and/or like getting shocks from capacitors, this is not a home repair item, nor is it worth paying someone to fix it. You might check with the manufacturer to see if its still under warranty.

Glad everyone enjoyed the "bag over your head" line, I thought it appropriate. So here's another one for you!

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Newegg refurbs on the other side. Plus some guy with a bag on his head was chasing it.

thats a pretty shady policy to me. the hassles of possible wasted time/return shipping seem far greater than any price benefit.

Nice way of wording it, newegg.

Yes, the items were tested by the original manufacturer, then shipped to a customer who returned it to newegg, who doesnt test it and resells it as "refurbished". I'm still waiting for some govt agency to have a little 'chat' with them about this, as it seems blatantly fraudulent to me.

These are NOT 'refurbished', which implies some activity to test and return the item to its original operating capabilities, they're as-is customer returns. BIG YMMV.

True some people have had fine luck buying these refurbs. I'd also bet you could put a bag over your head and run across the highway and half the time get to the other side ok.

Quite a few people have mentioned getting "refurbished" stuff from Newegg that is blatantly broken... and I think fraudulent would be a very good word to describe selling stuff like that. Are they signed up with BBB? If so, maybe people who have had these experiences should file reports with them.

I fell for this deal and ordered a Antec 430 True power REFERB. and sure enough no workie.... I plugged unit in and connected all my drives, powered unit on and it powers up but computer does not boot, no post window nothing... checked all connections and started again.. and same problem.. anyone have any ideas?

newegg refurbs, which we all know that they are mostly customer returns, are great deals to me. I also get great service from them to return DOA products, new or refurb.

I got lucky with a abit BG7 i got during summer. Saved myself $50 at the time. If I were you guys I would just get a true power supply at staples then PM with a coupon. It should be pretty cheap.

To add a bit of positive to this thread, I bought a refurb Entermax PSU from them a week ago and its been running fine and looked as brand new as as something wrapped in bubblewrap can.

Same here, I bought a refurb 350W Enermax and put it together this weekend and it is running fine (only ran it for 3-4 hours). I also bought a 431W Enermax at the same time and it powers up my other system okay but I'm having a boot problem which I think is unrelated.

Just remember that these come without power cords.
