If this were widescreen it would be perfect. Looks like a good deal though for people looking for a CRT.

The 21" Trinitron flat screen can be a beautiful thing. I have an $8 one bought at a neighborhood garage sale. Lots of nice CRT's getting swapped out now. Find a deal locally if you can.

You would not want to ship one of these back. Be careful about buying used off-lease equipment sight unseen. I've been in the warehouse of a local used equipment dealer and off-lease quality varies from great to gruesome. It might even start out good, but shippers hate heavy packages, so they get rolled off the trucks and kicked around before you get them.

The best LCD deals have been coming in around $129 for the same screen area (19" LCD roughly equals 21" CRT).

Don't LCD"s screen size match their viewable size? IE a 19" LCD is 19" viewable? Because a flat 21" CRT is 19.8" viewable so that would be pretty close to a 20" LCD.

If anyone's within driving distance of exit 19 - Kingston on I-87 NY Thruway (90 miles north of New York City and less than an hour's drive from Albany), my parents have two Dell P991 (rebadged Sony flat Trinitron) 19 inch CRTs that no one no longer uses:

One for $75, two for $100 cash and carry
(actually got a third one with a cracked base and some screen burn in and some sort of internal convergence problem (I think) which makes black text look reddish brown for $25 cash and carry).

Yahoo photo album here:
PICS of two (actually three*) Dell P991 (rebadged Sony flat Trinitron) 19 inch CRTs for sale in upstate New York

Correct. CRT's actual viweing area is roughly 1.5" smaller then stated size.

mshan, I'm all the way across the country. -_-

AccurateIT does have really good ratings. Pricewatch, ebay, zdnet, epinions, resellerwatch (as mentioned before). Just look at the links on the side. Azatek I would be wary of. I think I'm gonna get one from AccurateIT after my friend gets his.

My Dell refurb monitor was shipped, too, and I'm still using it. It was shipped with the computer too, so that's two heavy packages. It's lasted 5 years for me. I'm not too worried about having something shipped. I trust UPS.

I purchased a used IBM Trinitron 21" from surpluscomputers over a year ago. I looked at 5 models before I found one that was acceptably sharp and clear. It still has a small color tint to it and it's sharper near the center than the edges, but it's much better than the 21" Nokia I replaced. Those 5 models I looked at ranged from just under acceptable to horrible. So buyer beware with these off-lease monitors.

Well my friend who's getting the monitor had a Sony Trinitron 400 (or something like that). He said the model was about 9 years old. He's had it for a few years now.

Anyway, he had the same problem where the edges are a little blurry (only about 1/4 of an in). I don't know if he ever noticed it, I did when I was at his house, but I didn't say anything. It wasn't annoying at all. Also, he had a problem where the screen would go blurry (still readable, but hard on the eyes) with black backgrounds. It didn't always happen though, so it was weird, but most websites with majority black backgrounds caused it. Those websites are annoying to read anyway. I usually like to force them to black on white anyway.

I actually got monitors from accurateit before. Some of them had some scruffs on them, but not on the screen. They are local here, so i actually went and picked them up. It's just a warehouse full of monitors and they do 95% of sales online. BTW, they match prices from azatek for me when i bought from them, as that's one of their competitors.

good luck

Agreed, however, unboxing and setting one of these up is a 2 person proposistion. Big, bulky and 72 pounds.

Anyways...

I use the predecessor to these (Sun p/n 365-1383, Sony p/n GDM-5010PT) at work and home, and they are fantastic CRTs. I love the fact that they do both 13w3 and HD15 so I can switch between my PCs and workstations/servers at the touch of a button. I have three waiting for a replacement desk to hold them all (at ~70lbs each, 1/4" glasstop wont cut it :D)

The 365-1399s are even better, smaller dot pitch and perfectly flat vs trinitrons like mine that are ever-so-slightly curved around the y-axis like a coke can. I don't doubt the prices for bulk offlease workstation equipment given the LCD rush these days. But as said before, you really dont want to have to return one of these, so local pickups are always best. Keep an eye out for your local Craigslist offerings. I've scored one for $10 in the past.

THanks OP! I didn't buy one of these but I decided to try my luck on ebay (got one for $29 with local pickup and the option to return within 7 days)..

While looking I did find that CompUSA has auctions for 21" Trinitron monitors... LOTS of them, they all pretty much go for $1 but have $99 shipping.

My friend got his yesterday with no trouble from AccurateIT. It looks great, very sharp, great resolution support. 1600x1200 @ 75Hz for desktop use looks great. Very high refresh rates for the lower resolutions (gaming ones. At least I use lower res for gaming).

The only problem is we couldn't find drivers that work (Driverguide.net didn't work), so we're not sure if it has the maximum refresh rates enabled. Looks fine though anyway.

We got it up the stairs and on the desk fine with 2 people. It's pretty big, but that's okay. About 20" deep. Just move your table forward.

I bought a SGI branded Sony GDM 5411 flat 21" CRT on ebay for $126. After about a month it quit working. Then a week later I tried it again and it worked. Then a week later it no longer displayed anything and the power light blinked. So back to the 19" CRT. A week later it works again! A week later it stops working... Then it works again. Something intermitent in it keeps it from working smoothly. So a few months ago when Dell had the Dimension with free FP2007 20" LCD I got that. I still wish that CRT was reliable, I'd still rather use it because I've always like CRT above LCD. Luckily my video card can handle every game at the native resolution.

30" LCD = GTFO 16x10 2560x1600
24" CRT = 23" Viewable 16x10 with 2560x1600 fun (Sony FW900)
24" LCD = 24" Viewable 16x10 1920x1200
23" CRT = 20" Viewable (NEC like big bezels)
22" CRT = 20" Viewable (another lying NEC model)
22" LCD = 22" Viewable 16x10 3840x2400 IBM T221
21" CRT = 20" Viewable
20" CRT = 20" Viewable (They labelled it wrong)
20" LCD = 20" Viewable 4x3 1600x1200, 16x10 1680x1050
19" LCD = 19" Viewable 4x3 1280x1024, 16x10 1440x900

See, I memorize all this because I care. And I don't care much for widescreen LCDs below 1920x1200 because those resolutions are so odd. But I don't care to spend that much on a screen.

In every way 19" 4:3 LCDs are the worst possible display to have. You're paying more for a 17", and you have the same resolution. Not only that, but the resolution is a non standard nearly square 5:4 aspect ratio. Games and video were never created for this resolution. Anything you use or watch will be distorted or have black bars, except your desktop.

With CRT no resolution worries, set it to whatever you want! But shame on you if you use 1280x1024 on it. Where did this resolution come from? Why can't 1280x960 slay it, bury deep in the ground in an unmarked grave, and burn its history books?

CRTs are still excellent displays when kept above 75Hz. Personally my first choice is always CRT. I like large resolutions for graphic work and gaming with the flexibility to use any resolution. Also their response time is unmatched which is important in shooters. An LCD should only be used when space is a concern or you're a smaller person who goes to a lot of lan partys.

I'd like to buy another 21" CRT, but I'm running out of place to put all this computer stuff. :frown: Time for a new house! :D

Good deals on the 21" CRTs. We still use 'em at work, they are way better than the 20ms 19" IBM LCDs they've started replacing them with.

I'm pretty happy with my 24" 16:10 FW900 for $200 (physical pickup). But $130ish shipped is pretty awesome for a 21" CRT.

Amen. I have a 22 inch DELL Trinitron which is about 8 years old. Contrast and brightness are really low for me, can't see crap in some games unless I set it to 100 contrast and 50 brightness. Yet it beats 3 different LCDs I've seen (2 17 inch and one $450 19 inch). My friend has a Viewsonic 21" CRT. That thing OWNZ. He bought it brand new. I want to buy a 21-22 inch CRT under $200 but I'm worried that it will not look good (not sharp, faded and so on).
