Refurbed Maxtor 30GB 7200rpm ATA100 $65 shipped @ newegg

I'd be incredibly reluctant about purchasing a refurbished hard drive. Plus, there have been frequent deals lately to snag an 80 gig (or even 100 gig) drive for close to $100, brand new.

Not too keen on a refurb HD either. With the recent Dell deals, I got a 60 GIG 7200 HD (looks to be a WD, but not sure) + PS/2 mouse for $102.

I suppose that you can always send it back to Maxtor (since Newegg typically carries bulk OEM & retails) during the warranty period (& Maxtors seem to get good props for backing their warranty).

Not to put down this deal or anything, but from looking at the recent HD deals, it seems from time to time, you're able to get brand new 7200rpm HD's for about $1.50 per GB. Examples are the recent Maxtor 20GB 7200rpm HD at OD for $30 after MIR, and the WD 80GB 7200rpm HD at OfficeMax for $120 after MIR. The Sam's Club deal of a WD 100GB 7200rpm HD for $120 even beat this price. So, IMHO, a refurb 30GB 7200rpm selling for $65 (i.e. more than $2 per GB) doesn't really look too hot to me.

I think this is a good deal, as not everyone wants to spend $125+ on a hard drive. I have 80 gigs, and I don't use 2/3rds of it. So even though someone who doesnt need a ton of speace can get a hard drive thats cheaper per MB, he'd still be spending extra money for storage he will never use. So why pay more?

C. Montgomery, I wouldn't worry about problems with manufacturer refurbished drives, provided they were warranted for as long as the brand new versions because unlike refurbished monitors they're practically brand new, with everything replaced except for the aluminum castings.

Does anyone know why Newegg carries so many refurbished products?

Everyday I see a new hot deal about a NewEgg refurb.

I'm starting to have suspicions about Newegg and refurbs too... their RMA process is so streamlined for a reason. I order parts from several companies for machines at work, and Newegg has by and far the highest rate of failure on parts (around 5-10% of what they send me is DOA... hard drives are generally the biggest offender, followed by power supplies). I've never returned anything to Gogocity (and I've ordered equal amounts from them), never returned anything from Buy.com, and returns for PCProgress are extremely infrequent (once or twice ever, and it was on RAM). The one time I made the mistake of ordering a refurbished hard drive from Newegg, it turned out to be a beat up, used hard drive with bad bearings (over a year old, and heavily abused). They took it back without question, but it still cost me $9 shipping to do their RMA troubleshooting for them. Never, ever, ever again... screw me once, shame on them - screw me twice, shame on me.
Watch out for Newegg's warranty... they treat refurbs as OEM - meaning 30 days is all you get (and since they are OEM products, the hard drive manufacturer has no obligation to replace it if it breaks - it's up to whoever sold it to you to warranty). Dell brand OEM hard drives are the same way... 90 days is all you get. Period. Manufacturers know which drives are retail and which are OEM based on the serial numbers...

Take care and have a happy new year,
drake

The "refurbished" parts Newegg sells are items people have returned for a refund or exchange. Thats why you don't see many listed when they sell them, and they sell quick due to that reason, plus its usually a much lower price.

I've returned 2 video cards to newegg, but that was only because I didn't like the speed of the first card, and the 2nd one was an ATI Radeon 8500 that kept locking up on me in games, which isn't Neweggs fault. Otherwise everything I have ordered from newegg has been great. And I was very pleased with their return policy, unlike a lot of companies which make it a real hassle to return something.

Just checking now, and Neweggs web page says this:

Refurbished Items:
1 Refurbished products are products that contain components that have been owned by other clients and returned to NewEgg.com, Newegg.com guarantees all refurbished products for 30 days only. All refurbished items are considered OEM "barebone" parts.

Same here, but I'm not surprised if something goes bad when I do buy refurbs. It's a chance you take to save some money.

Since July of 2000, I have ordered enough parts from newEgg and TCWO to fully outfit a total of 26 Computer Systems. I have NOT every had a DOA part from either of them. The only thing I have had to return to them was software that was mislabeled (newEgg).... Newegg and TCWO will always get my order...
