REFURB - Seagate SCSI ST336753LC 36GB 15K U320 - $85

damn i miss my uw2 cheetah.....back then i paid 1000!!!!!! for a mere 9gig drive!!!!!!!talk about crazy!was well worth the money had the damn thing about 6+ years(and in this time frame udma went to ata33 to ata100,uw2 still kicked ata100's ass) then i finally decided to get rid of it and upgrade to sata.....couldnt see spending that much more money again for scsi upgrade.
 
THX OP.... A great deal IMO.... came up with free shipping to Massachusetts. I am not an engineer and may be wrong but from what I understand this drive has the fastest seek time of any drive ever made, 3.6ms....

1) I once had an HD 80pin-68pin adapter and had no issues with it whatsoever. Perhaps someone else can reply with known issues... one thing I can think of is that you will need to have an extra inch or two of depth (not sure exactly how deep they are) in order to accomodate the adapter...

2) Hypermicro has the same drive new for $269, this price has remained constant for the last year or so. The warranty on the new drive is also just 1 year according to Hypermicro site. As far as I remember, it used to come with a longer warranty (5 years?)

3) I have had my OS on an OEM Compaq rebadged Fujitsu MAM3184MP 18GB 68pin Ultra-160 SCSI 15,000RPM Hard Drive or over a year and have had no issues with it. It really seemed new to me and I imagine it was a system pull from a Compaq PC that never sold. I paid $89 shipped for it at the time and that was the best deal that I had seen after keeping an eye out for a long time. However, I do realize that factory recertified is always a crap shoot, but if you do need to RMA your drive....

4) Hypermicro has a 9.42 Lifetime Rating on Reseller Ratings. I personally can attest to having had an excellent relationship with them.... I once had to exchange a drive that I ordered advertently. I spoke with a truly caring human being on the phone who handled the whole thing for me... He was eager to mention that shipping is always free when you upgrade....

5) The Anandtech effect seems to be occuring... they have sold about 100 of these over the last two and a half days and last time I checked they only had 28 left.

I have the 18GB and 68pin version of this drive and it's really fast. The seagate warranty is very good too. I had to RMA once about a year ago and they sent me back a brand new drive pretty promptly.

BTW, I bought it from Hypermicro too. Good retailer.

For one, SCSI is less taxing on your processor...

Check this out:

these are small drives they are the ones i'm thinking of, btw the LC is the 80 pin SCA style, the LW is the 68 pin ultrawide if ya didn't know.

story behind 15K is they use smaller platters inside so they really dont get that much hotter than say a 10K drive. I'd run a fan on 5.25" mount bay like the triple fan dealio for sure and not get them too hot. These are server grade drives. Mind the warranty and who warrants them.

oem= junk. 99% of the scsi oem's you'll find cheap with non-seagate warranties will just end being a bunch of oem drives received back, they'll low level them a few times to get all the bad blocks clear and sell them to you. SMART will likely start showing defective/imminent failure way too soon.

I've had a bunch of 15K drives with only one failure, all brand new, the one literally came apart as in heads or something spinning around inside. Best to use for a temp drive (unrar'ing,craxtion,ftp server, or raid). I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole unless it came with a full seagate warranty myself.
 
1st gen seagates 15k have "martians" in them. Its a funky seeking sound some people are really annoyed of. 2nd and 3rd gen got rid of this, idle is about the same as 7.2k drives. 1st gen has xfer rates are only about 40MBps at the outer edge while 4th gen reaches a whopping 90MBps. 1st gen 15k have sub 7ms access and 2nd gen beyond have reached sub 6ms access times. 2nd gen raptors are slightly below 8. I've had every seagate 15k and they are great. Just don't expect miracles in most desktop usage. They beat the bejesus out of raptors though when thrash transfering. While $85 is nice for a 15k, pay a bit more for at least 2nd gen for overall better satisfaction.
 
Wow, that's a deal. Damn, out of stock though. I have Two X15-36LPs (the previous generation to this one) and they are great. I don't know about the 1 year warranty on this one though, the ones I bought previous were from hypermicro and came with a seagate 5 year warranty.

I just got mine. It does not indicate a model number, just a p/n: "OEM36LC-15". I wonder if I am to assume that it is a first gen as it does not say 15.3??

Also: Just checked... still OS.
 
OOS again since a few days ago! Still, if you guys want the lastest and greatest you need to go with the newest line of scsi drives to make the most out of it aka Fujitsu MAU, Seagate 15K.4, Maxtor Atlas 15K II, etc.
