WOW! That site links you to a HP site that is selling a 10 pack of x800xl agp cards for equiv. $40 a card!

Where I followed that link and it only compared the two cards. Anyway, I'm in for an XL. This will be a temporary upgrade in my ageing gaming rig then go to an HTPC which where it won't matter all that much between an x800xl and x850xtpe if it did in fact unlock.

We'll see how this turns out. Either way it will be way better than my 9700pro!

My order confirmation email for the X850 Pro listed the estimated ship date as being 3-4 weeks. Maybe ATi is erring on the side of caution or perhaps there have just been that many pre-orders for this card. In any event, I've been trying to cancel my order since last night and have yet to receive a confirmation. Maybe I just need to give them a call to make it go faster, or maybe it's just this much of a pain to cancel an order through the site. I don't want to be told they can't process my cancellation request after I place another order, so I'm waiting for the confirmation before I place another. I plan to be in for an X800 XL, though. Should be a beast of an upgrade over my current card either way and sooner is better.

does that work with the AGP version? the site makes no mention of AGP v. PCI-E...

direct link: http://svcompucycle.stores.yahoo.net/avc-at5-r2.html

Yes, I am using it on the AGP card myself.

Some other comments:
The 850Pro has *12* pipes, unless you can unlock to 16 which almost makes it an 850 XT.
BUT! There is absolutely no guarantee that all VIVO (yellow connector/whatever) cards will unlock. It depends on some of the register values you can see with ATITool.
The thread referenced earlier, pointing to the firmware hacks, should be studied carefully before messing around with BIOS files. You can easily lose fan control, for example, and still only have 12 pipes.

Overclocking: Can only speak for my BBA 850 Pro, but it clocks to 590/1180 from 500/1000. It's really fast now. Never bothered trying the additional pipes, my register values indicate it wouldn't work anyway.

I called hp up about that deal and the lady could not find the product on the site so she was an idiot, but anyway I'm guesisng that 10-piece doesnt mean 10 video cards... Dell and a number of other sites sell the same diamond viper for 380ish also so it would really suck if one card and 9 accessories came lol.

Is anyone else having trouble getting the x800 xl video in to work? I hooked up my xbox to the composite line-in set the software to composite and all I see is a black screen.

UPDATE:

I read in a few places that there have been driver issues with this card's VIVO features. So, I downgraded from the latest catalyst drivers to the driver that is on the cards CD and video in works now!

I found this post while searching around about the mod about how to flash for those without a floppy drive...

Here's what you do.

1) Go here and download an ISO image of the Ultimate Boot CD.

2) Burn all the applicable files needed for flashing on a CD-RW (recommended, I went through 4 discs before I had all the files I needed). At a bare minimum, I'd have the original BIOS obtained from a dump using ATI Tray Tools, an XT PE BIOS with the core/mem speeds set to default Pro speeds, and finally ATIFlash.

3) Boot up with the UBCD. After booting, hit "F1" for "Mainboard Tools", right-arrow twice to bring you to BIOS Utilities, then "F1" again for the first BIOS utility.

4) After the BIOS utility starts loading, hit "OK" each prompt to accept defaults (these should be fine for most systems). You'll be at a command prompt that looks something like:

T:\dos\apps>

5) Do a: "cd t:\" (without quotes) to bring you to the root dir of the disc, then pop your BIOS disc in.

6) Run your flasher. Typical usage would be:

Step 1:
atiflash -f -p 0 xtpe.bin -newbios
(substitute "xtpe.bin" for whatever you named the 16-pipe BIOS you'll be using)

Step 2: (without rebooting)
atiflash -f -p 0 oldbios.bin
(no "newbios" switch, oldbios.bin being the backup you made with ATI Tray Tools)

6) Reboot into Windows and use ATI Tray Tools or ATI Tool to check if your pipes are unlocked.

Good luck!

My x800xl booted fine but didnt work in 3d and text scrolled at a snails pace in internet explorer.

Got to go back, what a pain. But I suppose its going to happen sometimes with a refurb. :(

Looking to pull the trigger on the X800 XL and tried the code. It says its only valid on order over $149. Did they change it or did anyone else run into same issue?

Thanks!

Yeah...it worked for me a few days ago, so I'd say that they must've just changed it.

Also, some advice would be great. Is it worth getting the X800 XL for my system or should I hold off and put money towards rebuild down the road?

Current rig is

Athlon Barton 2500 (not overclocked)
1.5 GB 2700 RAM
ATI 9800 Pro (AGP)
80 GB Drive - 7200 RPM

Havent been doing that much gaming latley, but I think thats because my card stinks with todays higher-end games. I'm even having problems with Age of Empires III. Is this system bottleneck or is it worht the card upgrade?

Thanks!

I do not think this is a card for playing modern games. This is a card for someone who would otherwise buy an Xbox 360 and wants to wait 6months or a person who wants to play +1yr old games

This card IS for playing modern games...at this price point it's aimed at people who have 9200's and 9600's and I could go on. This card will let people who, like myself, want to be able to play the current generation without shelling out big bucks.

Granted you aren't going to be able to play Call of Duty 2 or FEAR at 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF...but you can do 1024x768 or 1280x1024 with low to medium settings just fine...which for a $120 card is great.

People who buy this card today aren't expecting to get 60+ fps in current games, but 25-30 fps is reasonable and possible.

Edit: as evidenced by Crashcart below

Considering most of us have a card that doesn't even make that chart, I think we'd take 32fps at those settings over 5 frames per minute. :p For a little more than $100, I'll gladly take a card that will let me play those games at slightly lower settings. This will easily keep my AGP system going long enough to wait out the Vista and DX10 launches. With that so close, a complete overhaul is just a waste of money.

And do you really have to run at 1600x1200, with AA4x, AF8x to be truly playing modern games? Not the linked to settings, exactly, I know.. But you can definitely enjoy a very playable experience with almost all modern games with these cards, even if it's not at super max cranked settings.

Just my two cents.

Yeah did all that the card got through their testing because it posted fine and appeared to run windows ok. But it never worked in 3d games.

Put my 9800pro back in and it ran everything fine.

This kind of stuff is not uncommon with refurbs, still a little ticked they let a non-functioning card in 3d through their testing.

Did you card actually appear to be "used" at all? ATI sells a LOT of "refurb" cards which are brand new (i.e., my X800XT PE).
