WOW, I tried canceling yesterday, then re-ordered thinking I had canceled. I got an email today telling me the cancel didn't work since it had already shipped out. I called their 1-888 number to try to cancel my 2nd order then. It looks like my 2nd order shipped out today, so I got 4x x800xl AGP's coming in next week...... At least they are a descent price. I should be able to off-load them fairly easily.

Hey, if you are looking for an x800pro PCI-E that's unlockable to xt-pe, then check out my FS/FT thread: Linky

So which of these is the better value and why? Looking to upgrade my son's gaming box and money is tight.

Edit: Found the answer here Anand's Article: X800XL vs. X850 Pro

"The X800 XL is just a better card than the X850 Pro, especially at the $349 price point ATI is shooting for."

I picked up the X800XL, runs great. Warning, it is a HUGE card!! It is 1 inch shorter than my NF7. Just barely fit.

nice thanks for the link. I think I'll get the X800 XL.

can anyone give me some advice on whether I should upgrade the Antec 380W stock PS in my sonata case in order to use that card? (right now I've got a 9800 Pro and a 3200+ in the case)

x800xl is fine with your psu, it doesn't require a molex connector to run.

Oh I ordered it about a week ago. I'm in Portland, Oregon. :)

I upgraded from a 9800 non-pro to the X800XL and my framerates doubled for Dungeons & Dragons Online, plus I'm able to run at higher quality settings. Your PSU should be fine as long as you're not running a lot of drives in your PC.

Although since the card has a molex input, you are "recommended" by ATI to plug your PSU into it.

I dont know if that is still acurate considering the different prices. Seems AnandTech was mainly talking about price to value but these are different prices with much closer difference in price. Article Price: 300 vs 400 (33% more) If same Ratio Deal would be 120 vs 160. But the Deal Price is: 120 vs 140 (16.6% more)

The question is if the 850pro is worth 16.6% more?

I'm having a real hard time differentiating between these cards and the 7800GS agp. I realize the 7800GS would be higher performing but the price on them is not moving. I think this new ATI pricing might make it drop a bit.

seems like you can get free shipping as standard on either card now, the x800xl and the x850pro. Anyone know if the x850 can be modded to x850PE?

I picked up the X800 XL to replace my 9600XT, and it is a profound improvement. I tried OC'ing it with ATT (the version bundled w/ the most recent Omega drivers). It would only go up to 420 core and 540 mem, with temps at ~65 degrees loaded (~50 degrees idle, my case cooling is pretty feeble). When I OC'd the mem it began to emit a distinctly unpleasant high frequency noise which wouldn't stop on reboot, I had to shut down the PC.

At best I would say the reason my particular card is a refurb is that it was returned b/c it could not overclock. At worst I would say this card has an issue or two. YMMV.

Should I return it based on the noise? I imagine ATI would tell me to shove it if I told them the card screamed when I overclocked it.

A lot of these returns are due to people running non-standard BIOS settings or diagnosing their problems as a bad videocard when its really a bad motherboard or ram.

The cards come with a 1 year warranty so though not a totally risk free proposition getting a refurb videocard, its pretty secure.

If I recall correctly X800XL's are known not to overclock well compared to the other X800 variants due to a different chip and die size. Look at the reviews and you will see the same I believe. I believe the max was 10-30 mhz at best.
On the screaming issue I believe that was more of a fault when the card could not take that speed (see above) and your system locked.
On the flip side the X850 pro should overclock pretty well but you are taking a gamble unlocking the 16 pipes that the XL already has stock.

Radeon X800 XL better then a 6600GT OC?

I have a 6600GT OC'ed but if an X800 XL is better then I will jump on this deal. It would be $113.00 shipped to TX.

Thank you.

I had read that they weren't good overclockers so I wasn't expecting stellar results. Stock speeds are more than enough for the gaming I do. I just didn't expect the high-frequency noise.
I should say that my system didn't lock. I was using the auto-overclock feature in ATT and it completed the process. The screaming began near the end of the process, after it had pretty much reached it's max. The OS and active programs were stable the entire time, I just had to shut down to get the card to be quiet.
I specifically bought the XL for the 16 pipes. I didn't trust my luck on unlocking the 850 Pro.

Tempted to get the x800 xl (upgrading from an ancient geforce3 ti200). Running it with a crappy old athlon 2200+ seems unbalanced.

But upgrading the cpu/mb probably means going to pci-x...

Yeah I know what you mean. I was running an Athlon XP 1800+ before I inherited an Athlon XP 2600+ CPU from my cousin. I'm also running a Radeon 8500LE 128Mb AGP card in my rig.

I ordered the X800XL card at ATi clearance center for $113.05 shipped. I just thought "What the heh, why not spend a little dough and not have to worry about any more choppy games!" Hopefully this card will last me another 5 years!
