Refurbished Inwin S506 mid-tower with Sparkle 300watt FSP300-60BTV power supply (AMD recommended power supply for Athlon up through XP2100).

Newegg.com, $29 plus $8 shipping = $37 total delivered.

This is certainly a very nice case for the price. Strong steel construction, nicely rolled edges (used my old one 4 years, never been cut or scratched), a quality unit - same as S500, but with different front panel. I think it comes with a front fan only, but mine came with front and rear fans installed.

HOWEVER: They are Newegg Refurbs. Their version of "Refurbished" is NOT what you find in the dictionary! The most recent description I have from Newegg is "The refurbished items have been opened and touched. They should all be considered OEM, barebones products. Because their origins can come from desparately different situations sometimes they come with some extras or in retail boxes. There should be nothing wrong with them". So, check them over very carefully to ensure it is as described (mine was missing the mounting rails, which snap into side holes of CR-ROM / floppy, then slide into expansion slot).

anyone tell me how the ps sits? is it hoz. like normal cases or vert. like on cheapo cases that blocks the hsf? looks to be a real hot deal

Can someone verify that it includes the PS?

It seems that for the other cases, the PS is included if it is mentioned in the description. This one doesn't mention a PS.

i love newegg refurbs but not refurb cases....they are missing so many pieces most of the time its a pain in the butt.

Anyone know where to get just the faceplates for INWIN cases? I have a S500 that I broke the tabs on. I sent Tech Support an email over a month ago and never got an answer. I really don't want to shell out more money for a new case when all I need is the front...

This is a quote from the In-Win website regarding the S506 power supply:

"Power Supply: Installed with 250/300 Watts ATX Power Supply"

So are you rolling the dice with this case? Newegg's description is silent about the PS.

orion19981: Power supply sits horizontally in S506/S500.

gdawson6: You're right. A refurb. case from Newegg can be a traumatic experience. I needed 3 phone calls to 3 different CSR's to get Newegg to credit me the money for the drive-bay mounting rails for a case. They did it, though. My only other choice was to RMA it, and they would credit shipping up to $25. However, I wanted the case!

IS300: The one I received has the Sparkle 300W power supply in it, but that may be the exception?

Royboy81: For Inwin parts, call 1-800-362-2983 (talk with Eddie). It's Digitgate Technology, Inc., Walnut, Ca. Or you could try www.digitgate.com. Phone order went fine. I have also broken the 2 tabs on the left side of my old S500 faceplate, and have had decent success with gluing the tips back on using Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue. It's a superglue, but NOT the kind you buy in hardware stores. etc (that stuff is crap!). To get GOOD stuff which works, I go to a Hobby Shop which supports Model Railroading. They sell 3 or 4 different types of CA glue. The brand around Maine is Insta-Cure (Bob Smith Industries). This stuff works!! The Hobby Shop also gives out a 6-page pamphlet which tells which CA to use for different circumstances:
INSTA-CURE will "wick" into joints, and cures in a few seconds (tight fitting joints).
INSTA-CURE + is for looser fitting joints, dries somewhat slower.
MAXI-CURE is extra thick, for more filling in looser joints, dries in 30-60 seconds.
I think I used INSTA-CURE + for the tabs.

thanks fox, so so their refurb cases are hit or miss? i have never order form them but could use a cheap case for awhile

orion19981: I think hit-or-miss is a good way to put it. I've only gotten 1 refurb. case from them (S506). I was not in a hurry, so it was OK that it didn't go perfectly. Here is a thread I had been following, prior to ordering:

link:

Looked to me like there was nothing to worry about, unless you had to have a 100% case right away. However, I had a difficult time getting them to credit me the $15 it cost me to order the necessary parts to make the case 100%. I'm not certain how people were getting free cases, and $35-50 back. Or they pushed it too much and Newegg changed their policy? Don't know!

So - My case was new, just missing the hardware bag. Looks like some get great cases, some have to work to make a go of it. If you're not necessarily in a hurry, and willing to work at it (if necessary), it can be a great deal. I'm happy with mine. Newegg is very good in Customer Service with NEW retail stuff. If you have a problem with their service for a refurb. item, I would suggest calling back (another shift/day/time) to get another CSR to try again.

Thanks, vs! I'll give those guys a call after I try the glue! Man you guys don't know how good it is knowing that someone on this board, well AnandTech overall, always has an answer. There are so many boards where you post a question and you're lucky to get a look, much less an answer. Thanks, again and kudos to all you great Anandtechers!

I just ordered one, so I guess I will cross my fingers and hope for the best. I've been looking for a cheap case for my second computer and was about to buy the $18 + $13 s/h case at Geeks, but it looked pretty cheap, so I went for the refurbed inwin from newegg. After I placed the order, the item id says "Case inwiniw-s506-iw.abs 300wbb", so I hope a 300w ps comes with it.

My guess is that it won't include a power supply. Other Inwin cases with a power supply have item numbers ending with "...300B" or something, while this one ends in "...ABS". I don't know what ABS stands for, though, so I could just be wagging my tongue at nothing.

Still a good deal, regardless though. Personally, I'm partial to Antec SX630's and 830's, because they're "ribbed for my pleasure"! 😛

Just thought I would give an update - I got my refurb case today. It is in perfect condition, packaged in the inwin box with styrofoam. It was also in a sealed bag and when I opened it up, there was not a scratch or dent on it. It has a front and a back 80mm fan and a 300 watt power supply - it is very quiet compared to my old enlight case. ABS is printed on the front and www.buyabs.com is also printed on the front in about 11 point font. I checked the website and ABS seems to be a computer seller. The only problem I had was it came with no rails - I was able to install my hdd and CDRW because there are two 3.5" and 1 5 1/4" slots that work without rails. It took some fancy drilling and shimming to get my floppy drive installed. I called newegg and complained because I really could use the rails and when I asked for a supervisor I got $10 off. I found I can get rails at www.directron.com, but it will cost me a little over $10. Still it is a great case for the price I paid.
