Refurb Epox 8k7a <oops, not 8kha!> or New ECS k7s5a?

Edit: OOOOOOOPS!!!!!!!!
I wanted to ask for a comparison between 8k7a (AMD 761) and k7s5a (SiS735)
I know the 8kha with the KT266 is not a good buy, and I want to stay away from 8kha (KT266A) coz of its slow disk access problem. I was considering 8k7a against k7s5a. (SiS 735 being faster and newer, but epox providing room for overclocking)
Thank you All for replying!!

I know these are two boards of different categories, the Epox is a great, stable, oc'ing board, whereas the ECS is a cheap solution, not much oc'ing, but offers DDR/SDR solution.

I can get a refurb Epox for around the same price as a new ECS, considering I am gonna use DDR mem, which board should I buy - the refurb Epox or the new ECS?

ECS K7S5A = SiS 735 vs. EPoX 8KHA = VIA KT266

for overclock ability go with EPoX; for performance and stability, go with ECS.
note: SiS735 is much faster than VIA KT266 in every aspects. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a different story if you compare ECS K7S5A to EPoX 8KHA+ that use VIA KT266A chipset, EPoX is your choice then.

I have researched the Epox and, although I decided on a Soltek, the Epox is a very good motherboard. For overclocking, I would definatly get the Epox...I have heard a lot of good success stories about it.

Of all PC components, refurbed motherboards are something I generally stay away from. Anyway, if it's the older 8kha, I'd opt for the K7S5A. I've had good experience with the two specimens myself and my brother bought. Overclocking (at least FSB) can easily be done via software under Windows with a freeware utility like SetFSB. Just my .02.

I'd stay away from refurbed mainboards in general. There are so many ways a mainboard can be subtly broken that I'd never want one someone else has (literally) screwed with already.

Besides, K7S5A is faster than 8KHA since the latter uses the older VIA KT266 chipset, not the dramatically faster KT266A.

You don't get much to toy around with on the ECS board ... but you get a good LAN entity almost for free.

regards, Peter

I would say neither for all of the reasons above and the fact that ECS will never be on my shopping list - a motherboard is just too critical for the system as a whole to be buying junk. Just my opinion.

Oh well, regalk again ... figure this: Did ECS K7S5A become the best selling single mainboard EVER because it's junk?

waqasusman,

Are you refering the 8kha+ or the regular 8kha? If the + model, get it over the k7s5a..If the non-plus model, flip a coin for your answer..Maybe even leaning towards k7s5a.

<< Oh well, regalk again ... figure this: Did ECS K7S5A become the best selling single mainboard EVER because it's junk? >>

Did so because it was/is cheap..

buy a new ECS K7S5A, I have a bad experience with EPoX 8K7A with the problem of booting up and lost CMOS setting, just my 2 cents though. Remember also that the EPoX 8K7A you wanna buy is a refurbished one. It's more risky than buying a new one.

<< Bump!

what would you suggest, refurb 8k7a(AMD761) or new k7s5a(SiS735)??
>>

Well, In this case, I would get the ECS...But make damn sure to get a good powersupply or you'll be posting back again with no-post, bsod or re-boot issues..

P.S. Good Ram don't hurt either in this board.

waqasusman: You are making the correct decision. I made the mistake of buying a refurb 8k7a+ in mid-March and I am still trying to work out the kinks. It may well end up as a paperweight...:disgust::disgust::disgust:

OMG!! what a nightmare you're having Hoagey, around a month trying to make the thing to work! Sorry to hear about that.
I won't ever think of "refurb mobo" again. btw, where did you buy it from? newegg has a 30 day return policy on refurbs, you didn't try to return it?
