Refurb BFG EX-1000 (W) PSU, $50+5 ship, geeks.com

Picked one of these up earlier this morning. Make sure to use the code "POWERWOOT".
With shipping it was $55. Great for a back up psu in case you need one on the fly.
 
I think BFG is going out of business, so the warranties will most likely not be honored if something breaks down on this. I could be wrong though.
 
Considering its a refurb; 90 days warranty. Wouldn't expect any backup from BFG itself anyways. Just going to have to keep an eye on it for a bit at first. As a backup/throwaway; the price was hard to beat 😀

Just because it doesn't have a manufacturer's warranty doesn't mean it isn't a good unit. $55 shipped is less than HALF of FOB China. Refurb, warranty or not, it is a hot deal.
 
Tempting at this awesome price, but I'm going to pass. I just get the feeling refurb means whatever BFG had in their RMA department plus stock on hand is being liquidated through geeks, working or not. I could luck into a new PSU, or I could get one I'd have to RMA immediately. Not feeling lucky today, but a great deal for those who are.
 
You know what though? Some of us "like myself" who build/repair systems could certainly appreciate this modular unit for builds or testing even if it's not a "true" 1k PSU

I ordered one myself 🙂

Well, chances are the PSU is fine. These were sold at Best Buy and the return rate there is really high (lax policies) but the actual failure rate of returned units is really low. jonnyGURU may have more precise numbers, but IIRC it was something like 19 out of 20 returned units worked just fine.

Even better since it really is a "true" 1kW PSU. It is rated 1kW @40°C continuous, and while initial pre-production review samples had a bit higher ripple** these PSUs never had any problems putting out rated power.

**I think ripple was still in spec, just higher than it should be for an enthusiast PSU. IIRC the higher ripple was just in the two modular PCIe connectors, so a couple extra caps were added for production models.

Wait, what? Mine is working great in my main rig (I know it barely strains the unit) but should I be worried? What do you mean by "bone stock capacitor configuration", are you referring to the ripple that plauged the pre-production units only? And wasn't that ripple still in spec?

It will work fine. The 12V2 rail came close to exceeding the ATX ripple spec, 12V3 exceeded it very slightly. Mind you this was at full load.

Both of mine have the exact same cap config. No worries though, nothing that $5 at DigiKey won't fix 🙂 (gonna slap on a Panasonic FM 2700uF 16V cap on each rail).
 
I'm looking at the one I bought and it doesn't seem to be refurbed at all, it has that "factory fresh" look and feel to it.
 
Received mine last week and it too seemed brand new and factory shrink wrapped. All acessory cables tied and "fresh looking"...Sometimes I think we worry too much about test results. Just let them work if they do and enjoy 🙂

interesting. I'll have to take a look at mine to see which it is. Can you tell without removing the cover (through the grates) or will I need to take it apart to see?
