Refurb 4890 for $125...good choice, or should I pass?

Update: I ordered the card 🙂

Here's a link to the hot deals thread on this, and here's a link to the refurb card on Tigerdirect and for reference a link to the card on Newegg. It comes with a one-year warranty, and I don't need any accessories with the card. The card will wind up being $124.50 after Bing cashback and a MIR for using ebillme.

I'm basically wondering if this is a good choice on two fronts. One is the fact that it's a refurb. And two is the fact that Fermi's around the corner.

I won't be able to spend more than $150, and the 4890 seems to be the best choice in that price range.

Any thoughts on this decision? For more info I'm upgrading from a 2900Pro and game at 1920x1080 resolution.

There's no way you can possibly go wrong w/ that card @ that price.

I'd be all over that instantly.
 
A year is plenty. I'd rather go with a refurb than a used card, and this is cheaper than most people sell their cards used. Ever with Fermi out nothing will change in your price bracket only in cards over $200 if that.
 
Exactly. At your price range, Fermi is completely a non-issue for you. Unless you absolutely prefer to buy new always, it's a no-brainer.
 
4890 is a fantastic card. If you get a year out of it it will be money well spent. It should be able to handle games for at least a couple more years... especially considering that graphical fidelity has been going down in general due to console ports.

Gasp! Would this be a shiny gem amidst all these disappointing rubbish?

I was hoping to get a 5000-series graphics card, but I think this will have to do. It doesn't look like there will be anything this good at this price for quite a while anyways....

I second this position, when the 5xxx series cards came out it was immediately evident that the 4890 would hold value for some time to come. The 58xx series while impressive, didn't exactly blow anything out of the water; not even AMD's last gen hardware!! At least, not in the way they were saying it would before release.

What with Anands review of the 5830 clearly showing signs of less compute power at similar clocks on a smaller manufacturing process with more SPU's, its that much more apperant. Save your money.

Hopefully the 58xx series gets a driver updated that change's all this but there's no way to be sure.
 
Just read the latest review of the HD 5830 on here, and you will see that the 4890 is still a beast. It is almost equal to the GTX 285 in a lot of benchmarks. Amazing!!

I did read it, and that's one of the main reasons I started looking at the 4890. It seems crazy that the least-expensive card that beats it is the 5850 that's over $300 right now (and has never been less than double what I paid for the 4890 AFAIK).
 
I saw this deal a few days ago and was thinking of the same thing. Decided to grab the card when I saw this post. However, I do have a question, how are XFX refub cards? I noticed that the above poster mentioned that it is better than a used one, since a refub has been verified by the manufacture. Has anyone had experiences with a bad refub?

Also, I believe that my psu only has one 6 pin PCIe connector and the 4890 requires 2. Would the refub card come with an extra 6 pin connector as with retail boxes?
 
I have a refurb MSI 4830 1GB. I was a bit annoyed that the card looked like it was handled roughly. It had fingerprints all over it and wasn't very clean.

Still, it works perfectly fine and OCs just as well as the NIB MSI 4830 512MB I bought months earlier.
 
If it's a manufacturer refurb and the manufacturer is the one backing up the warranty on the refurb part, I see nothing wrong at all with taking a chance on it. 1 year is a pretty decent warranty especially for a refurb. Hell, some OEMs only give 1 year on their NEW products.
 
just a note on XFX warranty. If you need to RMA your card and they don't have it on hand, then they'll make you wait, or give you a downgraded card, or offer you the chance of a lifetime to upgrade to a faster card at retail price.

One person has a specific problem with a company, and suddenly all people dealing with that company will have issues. All of them!

I get that you weren't happy with the deal, but other folks have had very good experiances with Xfx.

This is probably one of the cards you could have been using.....

Sounds like a great deal to me. I'd like to snag one, but I get tax thrown in, and they aren't even within a hundred miles.
 
Well my his 4890 is in rma which is being handled by lexy pacific. Their rma process requires you to fill out a pdf that you have to dl from them and either email or fax back requesting rma. They've had my card two weeks now and have emailed me stating they are in the process of replacing it. I'll probably have bought a new card before they return it back to me. XFX has one of the best warranties in the industry so don't knock them. My first choice would be evga but they don't do ati so xfx will get the business when I buy a 5970.
 
Holy hell that's a steal. I'm tempted to pick one up for crossfire, but I really don't need it! Agh!

When it comes to PC hardware refurbished means defective and about to die.

Hold off on that purchase in my opinion. Buy new.. you wont regret it as it will last years and years. gl :hmm:
 
lol, when I saw this deal, I had two friends sitting next to me. One was telling me to stop wasting my money, and the other was simply telling me I know I want it - though that was unnecessary. The moment I saw the deal, I pretty much already decided.
 
Would this refub card come with a 6 pin PCIe adapter? My psu only has 1 and 2 is required. I don't want to shell out another 8 bucks for an adapter on newegg. Tempted to just grab the 4870 new for $127 and not worry about it being a refub.
