Refreshrate and WinXP / Win2k Problems

Ok seriously now. One of the good things microsoft pointed out about winxp is how good it was for GAMING. OK so....why the hell cant they fix the damn refresh rate problem. Both of these OS make you search the web for thirdparty half assed refreshrate fixes. I mean come on now, its good for games but you dont make it so people can play them? What is wrong with MS. My problem is this, I use winXP and my refresh rate in games is stuck at 60hz so I go around the net trying to find refresh rate fixes. I must of downloaded like 4 before I found one that actually worked with my video card (geforce 3). The problem is, out of all the programs I tried to fix this, the one I found that works( and does work nicely), makes it so I cant USE TV OUT NOW!!. I mean what the hell, you need a refreshrate fix for your video card to play games then you cant use your TV OUT because of it. I hope someone has a way to fix this bs. Right now im stuck with using a refreshrate fix for games, then uninstaling that and video cards and reinstalling to use tv-out each time. As you can see the reason im mad...

Where are you seeing the refresh at 60? In the monitor's status? I just trick windows by making the monitors lowest refresh rate at 85 (I only use 1280X1024). Problem is, if I switch to 1600X1200 it will try to force the monitor to 85 and it only can do 75 at that res.

Trick windows by installing a monitors inf file or editing your own in regedit (never tried this with the regular PlugnPlay M$ driver).

Click here for a inf file that will set ur refresh at 85. However, I set up all my mode refresh rates (eg 1024@105hz,1600@75), so that I would not have to worry about pushing the refresh rate too high at high res's.

Install the file (update driver and select your own through' 'Have Disk'), then go into regedit. I have Win2k, and the display settings are in HKEY_LOC...\Sys...\Current...\Control\Class\{xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}\0000\ (mine is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96E-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}). Someone will have to direct you to the one for XP, since I believe it differs from win2k's path. I am not sure, but I believe it is something very similar to this path, and, at some point, has something like Video-XXXXXX. Once you do find it, you can expand the Modes out and add in others (all it has is 1600,1200) and set the appropriate refresh rates for your monitor (my 1280X1024 looks like this:30.0-95.0,85.0-85.0,+,+).

You do not actually have to find it in regedit, but I like to set the refresh rates for my res's for safety. Not sure that it would actually damage it (I think it just blanks out until window's counter goes down and changes back to the previous res), but I do not like taking chances

You hit your right monitor button(on my monitor anyways) in games and it shows you the refresh rate you are currently at. Setting the monitor refreshrate out of games for each resolution doesnt fix the games res. I guess I will have to figure out how to edit registry or use some other program because I need TV-OUT and I "NEED" to play games.

Try Nvidia's 40.72 or 41.03 drivers. They have adjustable refresh rates built right into their panel.
