Refresh Rate

I was wondering why my games jump then I noticed my refresh htz was 65, and my monitors max is 85. I guess its time to get a new one eh? 85 looks a good deal better but im sure Im really hurtin my game performance.

Well when I would move the mouse fast to shoot someone in CS:S. I checked my refresh and it was 65, put it to 85 and its alot better now. It should be smooth considering IM gettin 80-100 fps avg on all settings maxed.

The monitor's refresh rate setting won't affect the framerate output of your video card, but certainly could affect how your monitor displays it. Use the highest setting for your monitor at the resolution you are playing at.

Yeah, I figured the screen was lagging behind my graphics card output, its a old crt monitor I got with my hp like 3 years ago. What is the usual refresh rate these days? I know its higher than 85. Im thinking about selling my 6600gt and upgrading, but I guess thats pointless because my monitor is holding me back.

In the video drivers--advanced setting--Troubleshooting Tab for an option called ENABLE WRITE COMBINING.

Turn that OFF. I believe you will have to reboot and tell us if that helps.

I run my Desktop CRT at 85 Hz, LCD at 60Hz and my RPTV at 30Hz or 60Hz depending on source material....all appropriate for the displays, and probably the general concensus for each type.

If your CRT display supports 85 Hz in the resolution you play in, its not the component holding your performance back.

Well it is smooth at 85. phew I thought refresh rates were up in the 100s. Was just thinkin no point in upgrading if this monitor isnt gonna keep up. But its a 85hz CRT so I guess I can look into a 6800 series card.

85Hz at what resolution?

Have you checked benchmarks in the games you play with similar rigs to yours?

Oh sorry, I did turn off write combining and as far as I can tell things couldnt be running any better. Thanks guys, Now just a opinion on that 6800GT on newegg.

IMO, If your CRT only supports 85Hz to 1024x768, I'd look at a new monitor before buying a graphics card, especially if you are getting decent performance now.
