refresh rate + resolution question

i'm using a pny 6800gt w/ a sceptre 30" lcd

my desktop resolution is @800x 600, refresh rate for monitor at 75hertz
but i launch a game and change the resolution to 1280x1024
does the lcd refresh rate drop to 60hertz because the new resolution
is not supported by the video card and cause eye strain?

Well if you think about it logically:

Refresh rate is just how fast each pixel on a CRT monitor refreshes. It needs to refresh to reflect changes that occur and at 60Hz, it does it 60 times a second. On an LCD panel, every pixel is always on and reflects changes via a built in response time. Any eye strain you experience on an LCD monitor is totally independent of the refresh rate of the panel.

cos my lcd monitor is @60 hertz and i'm getting eyestrain

I also get eyestrain from LCDs quite quickly, but it's from the ghosting- not the refresh rate.

so the amount oh hertz means absolutely nothing when you're using an lcd?

It does, it indicates the maximum amount of screen updates you can have. It does not however, have anything to do with flicker or eyestrain as it does on CRTs.

The eyestrain might come from other things, like the brightness and/or contrast settings, and whether or not those settings are in line with the ambient room lighting. But LCD monitors don't cause eyestrain the same way a CRT monitor does. CRT monitors are basically rapidly flashing images at you -- think strobe light. LCD monitors merely adjust how much light you receive from an always-on backlight, so your eyes shouldn't suffer with it.
