Recently my radeon 9500 pro has the ability to goto 100hz in 1600x1200 on my Sony g520p. But on the radeon box it says that the max it can do is 85hz@1600x1200. Is it safe to run it at 100hz? Also, sony recommends 85hz at this res, so should I stay at 85?

No, there is a limit to wher eyou can bring the refresh rate higher. All sony's say 85hz. They also use PLUG n Play drivers(at least for me they are) but if you drop the "do not show higher ranges" box then you can jack it up to 100hz. If I lower my resz to 1024 I can hit 120hz. I believe it is just a give and take method, example if, 1600 is max resz and runs 60hz , then 1280 is recommended and runs at 85hz then 1024 would have no problem at 85hz and headroom to go to 100hz. I believe the recommended levels are the limits for the 85hz but if you go one step lower you should have some room to play with the hz without overstain , Just my 2 cents.
