Refresh rate and frames per second question

I was just wondering ... my IBM crt is at 85Hz refresh rate does this means that it can display maximum(theoretically) of 42.5 frames per second ????

85 FPS at 85 Hz. Or >85 FPS (accompanied by tearing) at 85 Hz.

With VSync enabled, if the card can't keep up it'd be 42.5 FPS. With triple buffering enabled it's something tricky like the next 1000/x FPS (1000/11=90.91, 83.33..). There's a good post on HardForum explaining better what happens with triple buffering.
