Refresh rate and Darkness

Ok, I downloaded a program called RivaTuner to fix the Windows XP refresh rate problem, and I used the 60hz fix on my computer, so it defaulted to the maximum (85hz), but now some of my games are really dark. For example, to get the brightness I used to have with Counter-Strike, I had to turn the in game settings to the max, and max out my brightness and contrast settings on my monitor, and it was still a bit darker then it was before. Is there a problem or something?

Also, by default, I have the desktop set at 75hz and my monitor brightness is at 80/100 and my contrast is at 100/100, and I usually have default settings in game. Anything less and it gets a bit to dark. Could it be that my monitor is just too dark to start with?

That happens often... as you increase the refresh rate the screen may get a bit darker. Do your drivers have any gamma correction? If it has, then maybe you could increase the gamma values

Yeah, I have brightness, contrast, and gamma controles in the video properties that have a far greater range than my monitor does, maybe I'll try those.

first pump up the gamma i.e. use gamma correction, then use more brightness or contrast from within the drivers... at least that's my advice
