The lastest Nvidia drivers have refresh rate adjustment for D3D but not OpenGL,for OpenGL & D3D you`re better off installing NVRefreshTool 2.1a from here ,works great with XP/2K and Nvidia drivers including latest 43.45 drivers.

NVRefreshTool is a utility used to fix the problem in Windows 2000/XP that sets your refresh rate to 60Hz when you play ANY game. This problem occurs whether or not you have a higher refresh rate set in your Display Properties of Windows.

NVRefreshTool is simple and easy to use. Just load up the NVRefreshTool program and it will automatically detect the maximum refresh rate at each resolution that your monitor supports. If you're an advanced user, you can customize each refresh rate at each resolution.

Thank you for the answer, I'll have to try it, I often play Return To Castle Wolfenstein, and I think it's based on Quake3 engine, am I right? So it should bu OpenGL ...

I have this old game, Jagged Alliance 2 that seems to lock all the time, any good links with tools to emulate environments or something (like Win98 on WinXP)? That major geeks link is quite cool :)

Thanks

Yep for OpenGL(above 60Hz) you`ll need the refresh fix,as for compatiability you know WinXP has a compatibility mode you can select(95,98 etc). All you need to do if you`ve a problem with an older game is to right click with mouse on the exe.com of the game in question ,select properties and you`ll see a compatibility tab at top, this is not a 100% guarantee it will run but can help some games run fine in compatibility mode.

I use RefreshForce. It's so easy to use. You just type in the refresh rate you want in the resolutions you want to use and reboot. Grab it or I can send it to you as I forgot where I got it.:)

What refresh problem???? Everyone keeps talking aobu this, but i dont see the problem. Turn off vsync in the openGL settings and games like Counter-Strike run at top speeds.

Am I missing something?

And what is the side-effect of turning vsync out?

ScrewFace:
Anready have RefreshForce & RefreshLock. Do you know the difference between them? It seems RefreshLock was some kind of temporary solution until RefreshForce came out ...

As far as I can tell, no side effects. Then again the I dont play many games that use OpenGl. I play HL and a few of the mods(CS, NS, DOD). Besides that I think most of my other games are Direct X like 1942.

If anyone can explain more about this topic please do.

What I'm here to address is Vsync, some people seem to think that it doesn't limit your FPS or rendering speed when in fact it does. 1st off I will try to explain Vsync as easily as I can, Vsync is when your video card waits for your monitor to refresh the vertical on your screen. Some of you are thinking: So what? How is that important? Well, on some monitors, turning off Vsync will stretch the vertical (up and down) too much and cause tearing in the textures, making the game hard to play. That is what I experience. But the real stir is wether is makes a difference on or off. I'm here to straighten that out.

Monitors have a refresh rate which is measured in Hertz (Hz) most of the monitors default to 60Hz.. Your average user will stay on that without knowing that there is better. I run my desktop at 1024x768 and 75Hz. That is about normal for advanced users, even getting into the low category. The higher the Hz the faster the monitor refreshes the screen making less flicker and much easier on the eyes. But what does this have to do with games? Most games have Vsync enabled by default... so that means that your game can't run faster than your refresh rate. If you have a 60Hz refresh rate, you can't get higher than 60 FPS in most games and usually lower. People that "tune" their system usually turn this off to allow the game to render as fast as it can, thus making more FPS. For some people there is no stretching and barely any flickering. But for a lot of people, including me, their screens get stretched so far that the game becomes unplayable.

link .

I personally prefer V-Sync on since I`ve had some games that did show tearing etc. In general for gaming I use (85Hz),there`s no real right or wrong just what you prefer.

Does NVidia have a solution to more then 60Hz refresh on games? Does it work?
Refresh Force (ReForce) works on any video card with any drivers.

Am I missing something?
Yeah, hit your monitor's OSD during gaming and you'll see that it's running at 60 Hz in OpenGL mode and 75 Hz in Direct3D mode. That's not optimal.
