Reformatting harddrive??

I think that this would be hardware but not sure, mods, if not could you move to right section? Here is my problem I want to reformat my harddrive that has windows on it so that I can reinstall windows; however, I am not sure how to go about doing this. I tried going to reformat and it said taht I need to close all programs that windows is currently running. How do I reformat the drive then so that I can install a new version of windows on it, and do a clean install?

should I just do the delete partition thing would that also work?

As I said you dont need to do that because from the install you can format & or delete and create a partition if you like.

Just boot off your win2000 cd & start the installation as usual, then you can chose to format or delete any partition you like from inside the intall program.

so then booting off the winxp drive and going to doing the format harddrive option is the way to do it then?

I never said to boot off a Winxp drive,I said Boot of your XP CDROM since you're doing a clean install anyways.

Why do 2 steps when you can do it in 1 easy step.

Boot off your XP CDROM then start the OS install,at one point it will tell you that there's allready an os then but keep going & you'll be able to format it.

Does the windows xp home "upgrade" give you the option of reformat after seeing you qualify? Or do you have to feed it your old Win 98 disk when it asks after you manually format?

Yes it does because you can fomat & delete partitions before you get to that confirmation screen.

hehe budman thats what I meant not the winxp drive, I did mean the cd, but I got it all figured out now and got a new os to play with, and I must say I love it, and the silver bar at the bottom is nice too.
