Ok, here's a refined rig. I got it way cheaper and hope to still hit the mark I was originally aiming for:
Newegg prices (and Xoxide for psu)

CPU: $296
Athlon 64 Socket 939 3500+

Motherboard: $131
MSI K8n Neo 2 Platinum

Video Card: $200
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

DVD-rw: $73
NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive, Black, Model ND-3500A BK, OEM

Harddrives: $88
Samsung SAMSUNG 160GBModel SP1614C, OEM Drive

RAM: $248
1gb PQI turbo pc3200

PSU: $108
Antec 550w

Case: $128
Cooler Master Wavemaster Case (Silver)

_______________________________________________________________________________________
Approximate total (less shipping and handling) $1272

Again, is anything over priced or unnecessary for playing high end games smoothly? According to reviews I can pull off Doom 3 at full specs at 1024x768 res.

Any comments or recommondations or should I commence?

He can't because he's going socket 939. And if you will just be playing Doom 3 Nvidia cards are better. Plus if you really wanted a 6800 you could always get a 3000+ or 3200+ then overclock them to 3500+ speeds.
