Always available upon request. Have another sheet with them printed in case they ask, but no one ever asked me for any.

Hm, sounds good. I've never put so much effort into getting a volunteering position

Don't even bother writing "references available upon request" on your resume. They know if they want references you'll give 'em or not get the job.

Stupid new laws an common sense make it pretty much impossible to give an honest opinion of someone in terms of a reference. For one thing, if you're putting someone as a reference, a person can assume that the reference would only say good things about you. Why would anyone put down a reference for someone that would trash them? Secondly, thanks to the popularity of people not accepting their shortcommings, a negative reference could mean a lawsuit for slander if a person doesn't get a job. Go figure.

Many companies now have a policy where they will only say if the person is elligible to be re-hired or not.

However, do have a sheet of references fomr various areas should they be requested... although I've NEVER had them requested.

And don't put "references available upon request" on the bottom of your resume. They assume that if you don't have references, that you'll make them available if they ask.

Edit: Damn, Injury beat me to it barely. :D

Naw, I already had one. Just had to update it a little. I had to go through three not-so-responsive people over the course of a couple weeks to finally find the right person, and I've never had to do the whole resume/interview thing either. Plus they only want volunteers who will cover an entire shift, and if I end up getting in, I have to go to a second location to fill out some papers, get a background check, etc.

I was referring to the volunteer position. If you are going to be volunterring why are they making it so diffucult to do so?

Ah. I'm doing it for grad school more than for my resume's sake. I don't plan on getting a decent job for another 6 years or so, so I doubt it'll help me much there. As for your other question, it's an inpatient mental health center, so I'm sure that's part of it.

10 replies all say only if requested and there is no need to state that point anywhere.

1 cover letter reference.

Looks like your question has been solidly answered.

Yep. Took like 11 people for someone to get it right though. Jeez.
