redhat looking more like windows

I'm new to linux but from what I've noticed about redahat 8.0 is that it looks more like windows. I was just wondering do you guys feek the same way. Well in a way thats good because I assume they are trying to appeal to windows users.

Just because the default desktop for RH looks like windows doesn't mean you can't change it. There are plenty of good window managers like blackbox, fluxbox, icewm, window maker ,waimea that all look much different and way better. Transparent windows and menus and virtual desktops have been around for a long time in most of those window managers, something windoze still doesn't have. You have the freedom of choice, use it 🙂

What we see happening with Linux is the same thing that was happening when IBM was trying to make OS/2 the desktop system of choice. The only way that could have happened if they made OS/2 to run Windows programs. They ended up only being able to run Win 3x to this day.

Now we see Linux attempting to do the same thing. They are creating all kinds of Windows emulators in order to run our favorite Windows programs on Linux. Same as with OS/2 Linux will fail at that attempt.

Emulators just do not work or run as well as the original thing does. Even Apple/Mac Windows emulators, although better than Linux/Windows emulators, still do not run as well or as fast as the real Windows does.

Honestly, the trend going is that Windows is looking more like *nix system GUI's. Have you seen the new screenshots for Windows Longhorn? That's hacking *nix so blatantly that it would slap you in the face! Just look at those side bars and 4-way virtual screens! Windows is bastardized Mac/*nix GUIs all the way; remember it was Microsoft that got dragged into court by Apple in the not-too-distant-past. Everything Microsoft does is a copy of something else.

Next thing ya know, Windows IE will have tabbed-browsing; for which *nix has had it for quite a while now!

Looking and being are two different things. Still Linux underneath.

Longhorn pics for he who wanted them Winbeta

Well, at least they're finally realizing that virtual desktops are nice...

Why is it that Microsoft's UI design is swinging so swiftly and forcefully to the "Fisher-Price My First Computer" style?

That is just the visual style that their "Geniuses"(sp?) come up with..By no means do you have to live with it..Better visual styles can be found here.

I think its great that newbies on their first install get a somewhat smooth stylish looking os instead of some hideous beast. Its a better first impression.

When one gets down to the bottom line those alternate OSs seem to always want to emulate Windows in one way or another.

Linux does not innovate but they copyate Windows. Windows is the standard by which Linux is helping itself to gain more users. Being free makes Linux attractive to those with a lot of free time on their hands. But to get any Linux worth installing one will have to pay for it. The good Linux OSs are not free.

Plus what is your time worth to you? If you spend most of your unproductive hours trying to make Linux run as well as Windows does and run many types of real professional programs? If your own time is worthless then you can afford to play with an OS that requires many hours of searching and downloading from multiple sources that is enough to discourage anyone who has to work for a living.

This is exactly why I don't use Windows for work, it takes to friggin long to make it work somewhat close to the way I'd like it to.
Works fine when I get home and wanna relax with some gaming though.

Oh and yeah, it sure is hard to install a program under Linux.

No they don't.

Copycat? No they don't.
Windows is the standard by which Linux is helping itself to gain more users.
Linux isn't a corporation. They aren't helping themselves to anything. The community behind Linux uses it because it suits their needs.
Being free makes Linux attractive to those with a lot of free time on their hands.
It's attractive because of it's capabilities too.
But to get any Linux worth installing one will have to pay for it.
Like Lindows?

bullshit

Aparenlty not much.
If you spend most of your unproductive hours trying to make Linux run as well as Windows does and run many types of real professional programs?
Spending your time trying to get Linux to run Windows apps isn't what most people do. If all you're going to do is run Windows apps, then well, run Windows.
If your own time is worthless then you can afford to play with an OS that requires many hours of searching and downloading from multiple sources that is enough to discourage anyone who has to work for a living.
People have hobbies and passions. It's not stupid because you might not like it. I don't say that people who work on cars are stupid...

Also, have you actually installed and used Linux, because it seems that you're comments are based of crap you've read and not experienced. I'm both a Windows and Linux user. I don't try to combine them, because that is a waste of time (It just won't work).

Um, people do realize the Linux is a kernel right? All that GUI stuff and applications are part of a distribution and are completely seperate from Linux...

I find people are starting to think the GUI they are running is the OS...

Linux may look like windows. And it may depend on emulators to run windows proggies. The only thing that's keeping it alive is that it's more secure and it's FREEEEE! 😀 You can't possibly tell me Microsoft is going to start giving Windows away for free. Linux will prevail!

I hope you aren't one of those GNU hippies, "I run the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel." Damn you Richard Stallman! 😉
