I'm getting redhat7 by the end of the week 🙂

I need to know whether a p5-100 or a 200mmx can run it, and if they are fast enough for surfing and learning linux. Eventually will find its way to my basic system as well. Do you reccomend a separate partition for it and multiboot? Would like to stick to win98se for a while as well. I'm using ranish partition manager for partitioning and booting.

Other useful info could be minimum memory and hard disk space requirements.

Linux is a great OS to run on older machines. You should have no trouble. However, if you run X Windows, you will probably experience some jerkiness. I'd say dual boot until you're comfortable with it.
 
How much RAM do you have in these systems. The Redhat installer is picky about having a good deal of RAM. I think (but am not sure) that it will choke on anything less than 24mb.

On the 200mmx which is my old system i have 32fpm and 32edo all of them simms but they work fine. The p5-100 is a gateway system of a friend that does not want to upgrade as she's currently using it for surfing only. Not sure what she has in but i expect around 32mb. Now I worry more for the disk space needed.

That is if I can make it work....first time to try linux 😀

If you are installing the X desktop you would want to use the faster system. It should work reasonably well, but definitely not too snappy. But good enough to familiarize yourself with Linux. I think you probably would get by with 500 mb or so if you only install one of the desktops (Gnome or KDE) and avoid stuff you don't need. If you stick with the non X components you probably could get by with 300 mb or so. I'm no expert so you might want to look at the linuxnewbie.org site and also look at the redhat documentation. Red hat is great. The one thing I'd recommend is that if your network card is not supported in the installation, that you get a card that is. Life will be much easier. I use the Netgear 100/10 PCI card which is supported and is recognized on installation. As to disk space, you can free up some space on your disk using partition magic or some similar utility. Then do the installation. If you want complete uncomplicated dual booting, set the system so you boot the Linux from a floppy and leave the w98 partition alone. Then without the floppy you will get w98. With it the Linux. In that case don't install Lilo on your hard disk, just have the installer make a boot floppy. OK, I just installed RH7.1 a few days ago and I think it's great. Good luck.
