Red ring strikes!!!

I am not a big 360 player but I did buy Call of Duty 4 today as well as an HDTV (finally, no more regular tv!) and was really pumped up to try it out. I got the 360 all hooked up and it red ringed on me! It wouldn't do it every time, but best case scenario it would still freeze up before I got to the actual game play.

Is that normal? (To not have a 100% rrod every time?) I am wondering if MS will charge me if it doesn't red ring while they have it for repairs?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it still is a RRoD problem so you should be fine. Might want to call them first and double check though.

This happened to me about 3 months ago. Sometimes it would freeze as soon as you turned it on and then RROD and sometimes you'd make it to the game screen before it would do it. One time it even let me play for 10 minutes before RROD at this point i just gave up and called them. 4 days later i recieved the return box, and 11 days after that i got my 360 back. No problems since then.

try placing a 80mm fan or two on the back of the system blowing air out. You will have to run it to its own power source. It might as least allow you to play until MS get a shipping box to you.

Same thing happened to me back in August when I bought my new 42" 1080p LCD. I got the TV hooked up and the 360 hooked up, and was very eager to see what games looked like on the new set. My 360 locked up at the loading screen in Gears of War, and I got the RROD consistently after that. I had to wait 5 weeks before I could get any 360 and HD-DVD (I had the add-on) goodness on my new TV.

When it would red ring on me (not just freeze) it would be 3 segments (of 4) that make up the entire red ring. That is the typically rrod, right?

Right. I used the towel trick on mine and managed another 6 weeks, but it finally died for good, so it is in Texas now. I made a repair order before trying the towel, so I already had a return box, should get the replacement next week .Hopefully I get a newer model for my 3rd one, but I'm not banking on it.

I doubt you'll get the falcon but at the very least you'll get the new heatsink.

Given enough time (as in: enough extreme temperature cycles) you have a 80++% chance of RROD with you new refurb, since the new heatsink did not entirely solve the root cause of the problem. Maybe your next refurb cycle, or the refurb cycle after that, will yield you a falcon.
