Why the assh*le response? You think $361 is a reasonable fee for a red light?

Tell me about it man...I just got a ticket for going 3mph over the speed limit. The fine is $237. To top it off if I want to fight it I have to go to Mayor's court (huge conflict of interest). Only way I can get it out of mayors court is if I demand a trial by jury...which I'll lose since I was going 3mph over the speed limit.

sucks

If it makes you stop running red lights, Id say: yes. Too little for endangering other peoples lifes tbh.

I think it's quite high.

High enough you'll probably think about it for some time to come.

It's also much lower than the total cost of the accident that could have resulted from you running the red light.

I've run red lights before, and I've gotten a ticket for it once. It was a nominal fine, and it made no dent in my driving habits; at that point, why even bother with a ticket? The fines should be high enough that they discourage the behaviour - much like parking tickets. If they were $3, and you didn't get towed, most people would park wherever they pleased.

Normally? No. California? Seems normal. ;)

I got a ticket for running a stop sign in Indiana, it was only $89. :)

Oh yeah sure...

first of all you don't know what happened... second of all.. you're a total idiot if you think I purposefully ran the red light.. or that somehow because of this ticket I'll be able to avoid the incident in the future..

you're even more of an idiot if you think the purpose of the high fine is anything less than fund raising...

The overwhelming attitude by people responding to this thread is that I'm this brazen criminal who simply ran a red light...

That simply isn't the case... I was driving a rental car in a strange city... it was a simple error... one you and your like could make just as easily.

So stop playing holier than thou, and stop assuming that I'm this brazen criminal... who kills people with my violent red light running.

They just installed those red light cameras at 3 different spots in the town I live in. Only a month ago.

Violation gets you a $85 fine.

You have to be an impatient/bad driver to get a ticket for running a red light. Enjoy your punishment. Those few minutes you saved were pretty expensive. I guess this puts it in perspective for you. You also have to remember this is CA. The state that just keeps spending and spending on all kinds of BS programs while they chase companies out of the state with their regulations and taxes. They have to pay for all that somehow.
