What a smoking deal ...

I was just in Best Buy this evening and saw something I wouldn't expect to have seen, a RCA 61" DLP Widescreen for $2,699 after instant 600 rebate. Some places are selling this for 3,000+, 4,000 ~ $4,299+. Best Buys normal price is $3,299. You simply cannot PERIOD find anything close to this. From what the Best Buy guys told me, this is a very high quality made TV unlike most of there other RCA stuff. I took a very close look at it and the quality is A-1. Picture was better, SLIGHTLY than the 3,999.99 Sony LCD Grand Wega 61". It also slightly beat out the 60" Panasonic LCD they head. Very excited to be getting this TV delivered this coming Thurs.

TV features, DVI, 3 sets of componets, a special X-Box port, ethernet ( corded ) for Web access. The OS is Microsoft Windows CE. They also sell a Wireless RCA branded Keyboard that has built in mouse but can also control the TV as well. Has many other features.

This is going to be the center piece to my HTPC that I am currently building. For those of you that are interested in that, here is a great starter link. http://www.htpcnews.com/main.php?id=hdtvgaming

Here are the specs on the RCA 61" DLP widescreen. http://www.rca.com/product/viewmodellist/browseproduct/0,2589,CI700320,00.html

Heard a rumor somewhere this is the same set as the 61" Samsung DLP? Regardless, 2699 is a smoking deal. The instant 600.00 rebate is only good thru tomorrow, 8-3-2004

Need an extended warrenty for your new 61" DLP Widescreen but don't want to pay best buy $399 for it? Look here: http://www.vikingwarranty.net/elec/overview/index.asp

Ummm, a little advice. Next time, take a second and go check their online price. You do any interested party a disservice when you do this, and to be fair to you, others do it as well. It's kinda like the people that rush to post on someones thread that their post is a repost. I don't get it then, and I don't get this.

I think it's more about soap boxing, chest beating, look at me ma, no hands or whatever you want to call it than anything else.

"nothing special" hardly

It's $3,199.99 online and in store and has not to my knowlage .. been on sale recently if ever, however I'm sure it's been price matched a few times.

Not counting the guy that just trolled the thread, anyone out there in the know ... knows this is a very hot deal.

Then again, not everyone has this kinda money to spend.

Looks like some are actually finally seeing the truth about RCA/GE/Proscan.
Pure disposable junk, made to last 1 to 3 years.
Yes, Consumer Reports, as well as all of us TV Techs have known this for a long time, but trying to tell the public is like beating a dead horse. Cheap wins over facts. At least those that buy this junk keep me in business that much longer. Thanks!

This is correct. I was looking into HDTV's and noticed this at Best Buy for 2799 last month. It is about that price everywhere. Just try searching for this TV on Froogle or Pricegrabber.

LOL; I bet you bought the 130 dollar DVI cable with it since the Best Buy guys must've said it is high quality. RCA=CRAP, PERIOD! You'll be lucky if your set survives before the first bulb goes out...

C'mon. Fair to warn him if you know it's not the best, but take it easy on him. It may last him awhile. I bought one of those crappy rca HTIB from Rat Shack the other day when the $50 rebate was on. I paid so little that I don't care if it lasts. Thanks for the heads up OP, and good luck with your new TV!

man i hate to crap like this, oh well.

HT magazines shoot out of rptvs, the rca came in dead last...
ht mag shootout

ht mag gets a little bit more credit than bb crew, not by much, but a little.

Ive seen the rca upclose and played with it quiet a bit... its really the bottom of the barrel when it comes to dlp sets.

More pertinent though is your desire for a htpc. FYI, this rca does not take in a 720p input thru dvi.

So this makes the htpc prospects nigh impossible, you could sync on the 1080i signal, but you would lose the primary advantage of a htpc, 1 to 1 pixel mapping.

2699 for a 61in screen cant be beat in a dlp set, as far as screen real estate goes, but you're gonna be in a bad neighborhood.

Good luck.

Notice in that review that the TV is reviewed at $4k. $1300 less would sway their view. They also state in the summary this is a good TV for people who don't turn the lights out to watch a movie. For most of my TV viewing that is the case. If I have to change the contrast when the lights go out so be it. Put the $1300 in the bank for a next gen DLP set.

Sorry but I do not agree at all. My wife and I got married back in September 99. In December, I bought a 31 inch RCA PiP television and an RCA DVD Player.
Looks like the DVD player crapped out 3 months ago. The TV is still alive and kicking. Moved it down to the bedroom in my new house, to make way for the 45 inch Panasonic 45LC12 LCD RPTV. The RCA TV has lasted and is still lasting through 5 years (in December) of heavy use (sometimes staying on for DAYS on end literally) and being used and abused by my 9 year-old, my 4-year old and my 3 year old (caught my 4 year old son running up to it and slamming it from 10 feet away, and have found crayon marks on the screen itself on different occasions). The only thing wrong with the TV now, is that my kids have been pressing the Channel Up button so much that the spring is either worn out or broken, and needs to be replaced. Otherwise the tube is still good.
I think I can get another 5 years out of it.

My general policy is to keep all of my "expensive toys" away from my kids and even my wife, but they have had full reign of my 31 inch televion (fortunately they will not be able to get to my Panny, cuz it is locked up in the family room.

RCA... is that the name brand with the dalmations? :)

Still have an RCA 4 head hifi vcr kickin after 10 years... too bad I lost the remote and access to its higher functions... :(

As to the RCA breaking that''s what the BB warranties are for! Gotta buy some warranty on that sucker and if it has the slightest hint of breaking call them up on it.

Come to think of it, my RCA Hi-Fi VCR is about 8 years old.
I had it before I was married.
I also had a nice 25 in RCA TV and a 27 inch GE TV which my parents have now. The GE TV is about 8 years old as well.

UPDATE: After spending $2,900 on the TV, Stand and 1 cent shipping, I owed it myself to take a closer look at this TV.

As we say here in Kansas, I'm "fixin" to get dressed and drag the girlfriend back down to the Bannister Kansas City, Mo area Best Buy that runs along I435 and Bannister Mall to get a refund on the TV and perhaps find something else.

3 other TV's that look good are the:

Sony Grand Wega 60" LCD @ Sears for $3499

Panasonic 60" LCD Projection, their high end one with PC input :) for right around $3500

Panasonic 50" LCD Projection, with PC input for $2,299 - 100 gift check - 100 gift card - 90 dollars roughly in reward zone points.

Wish me luck.

Regards.

P.S. I knew the RCA was a crap brand. When you spend $2,900 on what you think is a good deal at the time, you will find how easy it is to sometimes ignore better judgement and justify your actions. The saying "hoping against hope" comes to mind. When Rent-A-Center, and Rent-Way carry RCA's to rent out, that doesn't say much for the brand. LOL.

This deal had all the makings of a smoking deal save one thing, RCA does not live up to the same performance and quality of the other high end brands. If it did, perhaps the price wouldn't have been lower and or there an instant $600 dollar rebate.

I spent several hours doing research on this TV. Everything I knew to be true ... was. Everything anyone had to say on this thread was true as well. I also found out things no one else had mentioned. Like, a high number of people have had audio sync problems with this set due to the set being unable to handle the high rez video fast enough. People said this could be corrected with new recievers and the time delay setting? Wtf? No thanks. I will spare the rest of what I learned. I even went out to the local Besy Buy here where I learned the RCA was the least favorite of all the models period with the employees. The one thing I learned along my short journey that was the end all deal breaker was that the set I bought was on close-out. Do'h

Regards.

Prove your claims that RCA is "junk". I still have my grandpa's 19" RCA TV (23 years old), with manual tuner. It still works and the picture still looks good. My dad sold and worked on RCA TV's and electronics. He said they were some of the best TV's made.

Almost all electronics these days are MADE IN CHINA. So it really doesn't matter what brand you buy. The so-called "high end" products are being assembled on the same assembly lines as so-called "junk".

Junk = SAMSUNG. Now that's junk and cheaply made.

Wait for Christmas sales to hit. Just a few months away and the industry gossip was that the prices would hit $2000. Personally I dont like projections tvs. I think the bulb is rated for 2500 hours. When it blows you have to pony up a couple of hundred to replace it.
