Red Hat Linux knocks my socks off!

I'm a Linux newbie and I just installed Red Hat 7.3. I had been fiddling around with debian for some time and got nowhere with it. I couldn't figure out how to install my network card and the X configuration just would not let me run at the color depth and resolution I wanted. Red Hat did this all for me, automatically partioned my drive, allowed me to specify my network settings. (I know its user error that i couldn't do it in the first place, but I made more than a reasonable effort to learn). After logging into the GUI, I opened up the browser, and BAM, I was online! I was also impressed by the really sweet looking icons and themes within KDE. I think this is as user friendly as it gets for Linux, amazing! Slightly higher learning curve but its a great value considering its a solid OS with lots of free applications. More people should know about this!

I'm going to go download AIM for Linux. 🙂

Ditto. I had some faulty hardware, but after everything got up and running, the OS really kicks. I am becoming addicted to the GNOME worm game too. Doesn't 7.3 already have an AOL chat client? I could have sworn it does.

if you like the graphs you have...

try to download the new gnome 2.0...

it's amaziiiing

i just saw it today... It looks awesome.

It's still a beta..but works really well already

One quick question. I messed up my X configuration, and I have the GUI loading on startup, so I can't get in anymore.. How do I get to "safe mode" or get it to start the text only mode?

I got it, I used Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to get out. 🙂

To find out what I need, I basically use google to do some clever searches because I just don't feel like pouring over the online manual which may or may not have the answer.

gaim is sweet! My handle is "worst adm1n ever" :Q🙂

In UNIX operating systems, there are different runlevels, which represent sets of services started upon bootup. Runlevel 5 is graphical login whereas runlevel 3 is a text-only login (but otherwise full-featured). Check out /etc/inittab for some more info.

Anyway, you can specify the runlevel to enter from the boot loader. With LILO, you just pass the runlevel as a parameter to the boot label. Normally, the default Linux boot label is simply called "linux". So at the LILO prompt, do something like:

lilo: linux 3 <enter>

I'm sure there's a similar mechanism for GRUB, which is Red Hat's default boot loader these days.

Get into a terminal, do "telinit 3". That sets the initialization level to 3, which is text-only.

Wish redhat made a PPC version. I am having a hell of a time with Mandrake PPC on my iMac.

wow... another linux imac user. 🙂

i believe yellowdog linux is based on redhat.
try that.

i'm currently installing mandrake 8.2 on my rev a.
🙂
just for fun.

Few points:

1. Red Hat is not really KDE-friendly. They are Gnome-centric and it shows.

2. Gnome 2.0 is out, so you might want to give it a shot. I myself prefer KDE. Latest stable version is 3.0.2 with 3.1 alpha 1 is the bleeding-edge version. It has (among other things new eye-candy and features)

Other than that, welcome aboard 🙂

I find it ridiculous that you can't change screen size (resolution)/refresh rates/color depth using the GUI (or maybe I'm a moron and could not find those options, but I spent a long time looking in both Gnome and KDE on RH 7.3).

Lack of an easy installation scheme is another crappy feature. I don't enjoy going to the command line and installing RPM packages that way.

Not having a "my computer" on the desktop to view drives/folders/files is another crappy feature...

Linux is never going to gain worldwide popularity and public acceptance by savvy users and idiots alike until things become a hell of a lot more intuitive and easy to find/easy to accomplish.

Woot!.. I just installed RH7.3.. might i telll you the easiest linux install ever for me.

I remember slackware 2.0 days..

Anyway BillGates ---hehehehe.. if you cant find things.. you should stick to your own crappy OS.

If you want to put my computer kind of things.. you can add them to the Kdesktop.. its not too hard.. check the filemanager.
tgg

[ctrl][alt]+
[ctrl][alt]-

Those two increase or decrese the resolution (assuming that you have configured 'em). Changing color-depth is more complex and it's a pain in the ass.

There are package-managers in the GUI's. At least KDE has.

Oh come on! It's not Windows, it's Linux! And you can put icons on your desktop/toolbar that takes you to a filemanager. I have a button on my toolbar that launches filemanager, no problems there. I REALLY fail to see the problem!

It depends what you have gotten used to.

Other than OSX, you're running Linux on a Crapincrash? :Q

Short of naming and locating everything the exact same way as MS Windows, I fail to see how Red Hat and the linux community is supposed to accomodate users such as yourself. All of those pretty gui utilities exist, they just have different names and locations than what you are used to with MS Windows.
