red felt washers

are the red felt washers included when you buy a new motherboard necessary when you install them. i have my PIII on an asus p3v4x running without them and never had any problems for a year now. now i have a new athlon 1.2 on an epox 8kta3pro with the washers installed and have had any imaginable nuisance coming with it. i have them in this order from the mobo tray:

tray screws
mother board
felt washer
screw

also, if you can shed some light on what might be the culprit here. my hard disk sometimes becomes undetectable (about twice a month), the fsb goes down to 100 instead of 133 upon boot (i have no idea why this happens. its configured at default 9.0 x 133)

check your manual as I'm guessing that there's a jumper on the m/board you have to set depending if you're using a B or C thunderbird ie 100 or 133 fsb. the default setting would be for a 100fsb t/bird while you have a 133 specimen.

as for your washers, that's the order I use! 🙂

thanks bacillus. ill definitely check that as i dont have the pc here with me now. get back to you on it. thanks again! 🙂

🙂 Those red washers get a post every couple of months. Plenty of people throw them away without any harm. They are put in for a reason though so it's best to use them.

Wet one side with the tongue and then thread it on the screw. It should stick to the underside head of the screw. Now it's easy to put in with your magnetised screwdriver. I suppose you could use some other form of gum or glue but there's usually a fair bit of spittle readily available when installing a new mobo! 😀

Your motherboard may default back to 100MHz (factory defaults) as a preventative if you overclock it too hard and it will not pass the POST screen, or even POST at all. Thus (well most current Asus boards do this) if you switch the computer off, unplug it or it doesn't pass the POST then it will default back to 100MHz.

Cheers

I never ever used them & never had any problems, its best to just leave them in that plastic bag they came in.
