Hi all - my first post here, so be gentle :D

I have recently gotten my hands on 3 HP xw6400 workstations, and I was thinking of putting one of them up as a FreeNAS server.

My question is if it would handle the task.

Spec:
Dual Xeon 5130@2GHz
8 GB DDR2/667
Nvidia Quadro FX4500
Drives will prob be WD black (4x3 T, for starter - 6 or more as my wallet sees fit)

I'm planning jails for torrent, streaming, transcoding, etc..

Any thoughts??

The video card is a waste of electricity, I believe, but you'd have to spend money to replace it in those.

You may need to get a 5.25" HDD caddy device, or DAS equipment, for than a few HDDs.

Beyond that, it should not merely handle it, but be overkill.

It'll definitely handle the load, but as Dave mentioned, it'll use a lot more electricity than a newer system with comparable performance (a single Pentium G3258 will run circles around those original Core 2 Duo-based Xeons).
