It's pretty obvious to me. If recycling made sense, there would be money in it. Companies would be fighting to take your recyclable trash and turn it into usable stuff to resell. However, that doesn't occur. Instead you have to PAY someone to recycle your crap. Obviously there is a failure somewhere along the line if you have to pay someone to make it worth their while to recycle your crap.

There is money in recycling, ever wonder why they kept finding those charred bodies gripping bolt cutters when copper was so high last summer?

In a few specific cases, sure. But most of the crap you actually have to pay a company to haul away, obviously there can't be much money in it or other companies would compete with them and take your trash for free or even pay you.

Actually until recently many paid for paper, but now they have to charge. But the charge for paper is less then what is charged to take away as trash.

In some areas just about everything is good to recycle. But in others, like feralkid gave example, there might be soem things that are just not easy to do.

Here in N.VA they have a list of what they will take and not take now.

Little things help also. I reuse cereal and bread bags for my daughters lunch. Those are 100% recycled, 100% post consumer content :^D

That doesn't make a huge difference with 1 person, but if everybody did it, it's fairly significant.

Basically all metals, used motor oil, used cooking oil. It's not an insignificant waste stream we're talking here. Even if you can't get paid outright for paper, much of it can be composted safely. Many building materials ca be resued or recycled. You can dispose of a lot of unwanted stuff through craigslist.
