Recovering data from an ibook harddrive circa 1999-2001

So I had to absolutely rip apart a friend's old, old, old ibook (the ones with the clamshell and the ugly colors) to get the HD out. I figured I'd be able to recover the data pretty easily (just some text docs and such) but I figured wrong. I'm not sure which file system they were using then but I do know that Windows Vista can't read it, let alone see it.

What's my best course of action here?

MacDrive will allow a PC to read the drive.

Is he getting rid of the iBook? Maybe I could use it for parts... PM me if so.
