Recover Word File?

I was editing someone's Microsoft Word document in Word 2007 after opening it up in an email via Windows Live Mail. After I was done I did my standard Alt-F-S key combination to save the document. I closed the program.

Then I realized that I didn't know where the program saved the file to, because I didn't use the "save as" option. So for the life of me, I can't figure out what happened to the file. No error messages displayed when I saved it, and I can't find any trace of it in the temp directory.

Anybody knows what happens in a situation like this? I think Word just said it "saved" the file but didn't do anything and now it's gone.

If you opened from an attachment? Then you may be able to find it within C\>Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. The filename will not be what it was in the attachment, but more something like GetAttachment.aspx? If you can't find after that, you could also try just opening the attachment again. If still available it should open your edited version.

Substitute Users for Documents and Settings, and AppData for Application Data if using Windows XP.

I actually didn't see the directory of Temporary Internet Files, but I searched for the file GetAttachment.aspx and nothing came up. Tried opening up the attachment again, and it reverted back to the original unedited document.

Also searched the directories for temporary word files and recovery files but nothing came up.

I guess I should just get into the habit of downloading anything to my computer first before editing it. It just sucks that Word allowed me to "save" my file without actually saving it. At this point it doesn't really matter too much, since I just re-edited the document (took a few friggin hours again) but I was kind of curious to know how to correct it in case it happens in the future.

Kind of a bad bug if you ask me.

Thanks though

I tried that earlier, but there's nothing in that directory.

For some reason, today I decided to open that email again and Word managed to recover that information. I did the same thing half a dozen times earlier and nothing happened. So that means that the information is there somewhere, it's just somehow inaccessible. Weird.

OK - then now is the time to do what should have been done in the first place . . . a SAVE AS.
