Recover passwords from XP ?

Hello,

one guy when got a new comp, entered a password for XP and forgot it ... is there any way to recover/make new one ?

I tried deleting SAM , and then doing repair, but didn't have some floppy to do it on me, but would this do the trick ? or I have to do something else ?
